How to plan heritage month events at work

Six steps that turn a list of months into a year people look forward to.

  1. 1Name one ownerOne person in HR, the people team or a culture committee holds the calendar and the budget, so no month gets forgotten.
  2. 2Ask your ERGs firstAsk each employee resource group what the month means to them and what they want. They shape the tone; the owner handles logistics.
  3. 3Set a budget for the yearBudget one hosted event for each month you mark, plus small extras. A hosted heritage game is $39 a person for a group of 25 ($975 package).
  4. 4Put the dates on a calendarBlock every month you mark before the year starts. Book hosted games about 2 weeks ahead; February and June dates book up early.
  5. 5One hosted event, then smaller touchesThe event gives everyone the same hour together. Around it, add an ERG reading list, a slot in the all-hands or a lunch from a local business.
  6. 6Follow upA short pulse survey goes out automatically after every event to participants with an email. Share what you heard with the ERG and plan next year together.

How to celebrate heritage months respectfully

Short rules that keep a celebration from turning into a checkbox.

  • Let the community leadInvolve the ERG from the start and credit it by name when you announce the event.
  • Don't make one person the spokespersonNever ask the one colleague from a community to explain it to everyone else.
  • Pay speakers and organizersPay outside speakers a fee, and give ERG leads work time for the planning they do.
  • Make it accessibleTurn captions on, share slides ahead and let people play with cameras off.
  • Plan for time zonesWhen one slot can't fit everyone's workday, a hosted game can run as two sessions.
  • Keep it optional and on work timeHold events during working hours and never track who skips them.
  • Skip costumes and propsNo headdresses, sombreros or put-on accents, at the event or in the photos after.
  • Carry it past the monthAsk the ERG what should change in hiring, promotion or policy, and report back on it.

What are heritage months?

Months set aside to recognize the history and contributions of a community, such as Black History Month in February or Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15. Many are recognized nationally by an act of Congress or a presidential proclamation. At work they are a reason to learn together and to hear from colleagues.

How do we celebrate Native American Heritage Month at work?

November is Native American Heritage Month, and the Friday after Thanksgiving is Native American Heritage Day. Book the live Indigenous Fundamentals workshop, invite a Native speaker and pay their fee, and buy gifts or catering from Native-owned businesses. What are good Hispanic Heritage Month activities for work?

A hosted game is the easiest way to get everyone in: Hispanic Heritage Games & Trivia or the Hispanic Heritage Quiz Showdown, both about an hour. Round out your Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations with a playlist or reading list your ERG picks. The month runs September 15 to October 15, so you can plan an event in either month. What are good Black History Month activities for work?

Can remote and hybrid teams join?

Yes. Every event here runs live on Zoom by default, or Teams, Google Meet or Webex on request. Hybrid teams can join as one virtual event, with the office on a shared screen. When one time slot can't fit everyone, a hosted game can run as two sessions.

How far ahead should we book?

About 2 weeks for any event on this page, and 4 weeks if you want custom questions or branding. February and June dates book up early: for Black History Month 2027, book by January 18, 2027 to run your event in the first week of February.

How much do heritage month events cost?

Hosted games like Black History Trivia & Games are $39 a person for a group of 25 ($975 package). Indigenous Fundamentals has one price for the group, shown on its page. You see the full price before you book, and a 50% deposit holds the date.
