After the call: the first two months

The host covers care in class. Send this list round afterwards so the herbs make it to the kitchen.

  • Day 1Give the pots your brightest window. South-facing is best; a bright east or west window also works.
  • Weeks 1 to 2Nothing showing yet is normal: herb seeds germinate slowly, in about 10 to 14 days.
  • Every few daysWater lightly, about twice a week, and let the soil dry slightly in between. Soggy soil kills seedlings.
  • Dark window?Run a grow light 6 to 12 inches above the leaves, on a timer for 12 to 16 hours a day.
  • Crowded potsThin each pot to its strongest, most compact seedling.
  • Weeks 6 to 8Pinch back the tops so the plants branch out instead of growing tall.
  • First harvestCut just above a pair of leaves. Leave 4 to 6 inches of stem on annual herbs; take only the top third from perennials.

  • Teams who cookThree culinary herbs for the kitchen, and the host covers how to use them.
  • A winter pick-me-upSomething green on the windowsill in the dark months, with a grow light.

Virtual herb garden workshop questions

How does a virtual herb garden workshop work?

Every guest gets a growing kit at home before the day. A live host leads a 60-minute session on your video call: two ways to plant seeds, then watering and sunlight for the weeks after. No gardening experience needed; the host shows each step first.

How much does a virtual herb gardening class cost per person?

Herb Gardening is $69 a person plus a $379 base fee, kit and continental US shipping included. That comes to $2,104 in total for 25 guests, about $85 a person. The price per person drops as the group grows. A 50% deposit holds the date, and the invoice follows your final headcount.

What's in the herb gardening kit, and what do guests need at home?

The kit has seeds for 3 culinary herbs, 3 coco peat pots, 3 compressed soil pellets, seed-starter soil, a soil block, a tray, a bowl, a mini shovel, gloves, 3 plant ID signs and a wooden coaster. Guests add a mixing bowl, a flat tray, a cup of clean water and a covered work surface, plus a sunny window or grow light for the weeks after. Kits can vary slightly.

Can seed kits ship to employees in Canada or outside the US?

Herb Gardening ships to the continental US with shipping included and lists a per-guest fee for other addresses: Alaska, Hawaii & US territories +$75 a guest, Canada +$60 a guest, International +$45 a guest. Many countries regulate seed imports, so tell us early which countries any guests outside the US are in. With guests outside the US, book about 5 weeks ahead.

How long until the herbs sprout, and how do we keep them alive?

Herb seeds are slow: expect sprouts in about 10 to 14 days. Keep the pots in your brightest window, water lightly about twice a week and let the soil dry slightly in between. A grow light on a timer helps in a dark room or in winter.

How far ahead should we book, and when are addresses due?

Book at least 16 days ahead. Addresses are due 14 days before the event, so share the address form early. December dates fill first: for a December event, book by mid-November.

Does it work for hybrid teams or people in different time zones?

Yes. Office guests plant together in front of one room screen the host can see and hear, while remote guests join from home. For a team spread across time zones, book two sessions so everyone plants during their own workday.

Is herb gardening a good team building activity for Earth Day or a wellness week?

Yes. It is calm and hands-on with no winners or losers, and people grow their herbs for weeks after the call. Pair it with a terrarium or zen garden kit for a series, or read more on gardening team building for workplace wellness.
