How to run a step challenge at work

Seven decisions make a step challenge fair and fun for everyone, not only the marathon runners.

  1. Pick the length. Two to four weeks: long enough to build a habit, short enough to keep the energy up.
  2. Make teams, not just a leaderboard. Teams of five to eight, mixing departments. Teams keep people going on the days they'd quit alone.
  3. Score by average, not total. Rank teams by average steps per member so a team of five can beat a team of eight.
  4. Count active minutes too. Let people log cycling, swimming, wheelchair pushes or yoga as minutes, so nobody is left out.
  5. Use whatever people already have. Any phone or fitness tracker works. Have people post a daily or weekly total on the honor system.
  6. Share results every Friday. A short post with team standings and one fun stat keeps the energy up.
  7. End with a celebration. Announce winners at a short event and give small prizes. Recognize most improved, not only the top.

Wellness challenge rules and scoring

Simple scoring people can track themselves, and five rules that keep it healthy.

Scoring

  • 1 point for each daily challenge completed
  • 2 bonus points for completing all five days in a week
  • Team score = average points per member
  • Honor system: people log their own checkmarks
  • Weekly shout-out for the top team and most improved
  • Small prizes at the finale, plus a team-wide reward if everyone takes part

Keep it fair

  • Make it opt-in, with no penalty for sitting out
  • Never track weight, body measurements or calories
  • Offer an alternative for every physical challenge
  • Keep personal data private; share team totals only
  • Keep challenges inside the workday where you can

Workplace wellness challenge FAQ

What is a workplace wellness challenge?

A friendly competition where employees build a healthy habit over a set period, usually two to four weeks. People or teams complete small daily challenges, like walking, drinking water, sleeping well or taking screen breaks, and earn points toward a shared goal or small prizes.

How do you run a step challenge at work?

Set a length of two to four weeks, form teams of five to eight, and have people log steps from any phone or tracker. Rank teams by average steps per member, let people log other activity as active minutes, share standings every Friday and end with a celebration.

What are good wellness challenge ideas for remote teams?

A virtual race where combined steps travel across a map, phone-free meals, log-off times, a daily five minutes of calm, and a live yoga or meditation class on Zoom. Kit workshops like a desk zen garden ship to every home so remote people share the same moment.

How do you score a wellness challenge?

Keep it simple: 1 point per daily challenge completed and 2 bonus points for a full week. Score teams by average points per member so team size doesn't matter, and use the honor system so nobody has to share health data.

How long should a wellness challenge last?

Two to four weeks works for most teams. Four weeks gives you one focus per week, like steps, hydration, sleep and mindfulness, which is what the planner on this page builds.

What prizes work for a wellness challenge?

Small and healthy: a water bottle, a plant, a fitness class pass, an extra break or a gift box. A team-wide reward at the end, such as a hosted yoga class or a team game, celebrates everyone who took part, not only the winners.

How do you keep a wellness challenge inclusive?

Make it opt-in, offer an alternative for every physical challenge, count active minutes as well as steps, never track weight or calories, and only share team totals. Mix in sleep, mindfulness and kindness challenges so it isn't only about fitness.
