Referral thank you gifts

Referral thank you gifts for the people who send you business

A good referral thank you gift arrives the week the referral becomes business, fits the size of what it brought you, and stays inside your industry's rules. Gifts from $22 to $432, with your note inside.

What to send, by who referred you

Match the gift to the person and to what the referral turned into. One real gift for each kind of referrer:

Every gift is chocolate. If the person you are thanking has an allergy or a diet to work around, check the ingredients before you order.

Every gift opens our partner store, where you can order online. Sending to a long list or adding your logo? Get a free quote with volume pricing instead.

When to send: the week the referral becomes business

Thank people twice: a quick word the day they make the intro, and a gift when it turns into a client.

  1. The day of the intro: say thanks. A call or a short email the same day. No gift yet; you do not know where it goes.

  2. When it turns into business: order the gift. The day the client signs, closes or books. Unbranded gifts need about 2 to 3 weeks, so order that day.

  3. Tell them how it went. Put one line in the note: the referral became a client. Leave out anything your client would want kept private.

  4. At year end: thank your top referrers again. One bigger gift for the people who sent the most, so it arrives before the holiday break.

To arrive by Friday, December 18, 2026, order unbranded gifts by Friday, November 27, 2026, and gifts with your logo by Friday, November 20, 2026.

How much to spend, by size of referral

Set a few flat bands and give everyone in a band the same gift. Bigger referrals move up a band, not up a percentage.

Referral gift rules in regulated industries

Some fields limit or forbid giving anything of value for a referral. Here is what the rules say as published. It is general information, not advice: check with your compliance team or broker before you send.

  • Real estate, mortgage and title

Under RESPA, as written in Regulation X, no person may give or accept any fee, kickback or other thing of value under an agreement or understanding to refer settlement service business on a federally related mortgage loan. Check your state license rules too.

  • Broker-dealers

FINRA Rule 3220 limits what a member firm and its people may give anyone in relation to the business of the recipient's employer. FINRA raised the limit from $100 to $300 per person per year, effective March 30, 2026.

  • Healthcare

The federal Anti-Kickback Statute prohibits knowingly and willfully paying remuneration to induce or reward patient referrals for items or services paid by federal health care programs, and remuneration includes anything of value.

Lawyers, investment advisers, insurance agents and other licensed professionals have their own rules on rewarding referrals. Ask your compliance or ethics office before you set up any thank-you gift.

A referral thank-you that runs itself

For agencies, advisors, agents and B2B service firms that get referrals every month.

  1. Pick one gift per band. One for an intro, one for a new client, one for a large account. Everyone in a band gets the same.

  2. Keep it flat, not a percentage. A gift sized to the fee looks like a referral fee. A set gift per band reads as thanks.

  3. Send one list a month. Each referrer's name, address and note in one spreadsheet. Each gift ships to its own address; minimums are typically 10 per gift.

  4. Clear it with compliance once. In a regulated field, get the program approved before you announce it, then log each gift the way your firm asks.

The client they sent deserves a welcome too: see client welcome gifts. In real estate, pair it with closing gifts for the buyer, and see client gift ideas for the rest of your client list.

The note is the thank-you

Say who they sent, that it worked out, and thank you. Keep the sales pitch and any client details out.

  • A personal message goes inside every box.
  • Branded ribbon, printed packaging and inserts, where the gift allows, are on custom logo gifts; branding needs 4 to 6 weeks, so set it up once for a standing order.

Referral notes you can adapt

  • Thank you for introducing us to Jordan. They signed on Tuesday, and we are glad to be working together.
  • You didn't have to think of us, and you did. Thank you for the introduction.
  • Third referral this year. Thank you for trusting us with the people you know.
  • Thanks for sending the Parkers our way. They closed last week and love the house.

Referral gift questions

What is a good referral thank you gift?

Something the person can share or enjoy that week, with a note saying the referral worked out: a chocolate gift box for a past client, a modest box for a colleague at another firm, or a tower for a partner office that refers often.

How much should you spend on a referral gift?

Set flat bands by size of referral: under $40 for an introduction that did not close, $40 to $100 for a typical new client, more for a large account or your top referrer of the year. Our gifts run from $22 to $432.

When should you send a client referral gift?

Say thank you the day of the introduction, then send the gift when the referral turns into business: the day the client signs, closes or books. Unbranded gifts need about 2 to 3 weeks, so order that day.

Should you send a gift if the referral did not become a client?

Yes, a smaller one. Thanking the introduction, not the outcome, keeps people sending you the next one.

Can real estate agents give referral gifts?

It depends on who gets it. Under RESPA, as written in Regulation X (12 CFR 1024.14), no person may give or accept a thing of value under an agreement or understanding to refer settlement service business on a federally related mortgage loan. Check with your broker and your state license rules before you send.

Can financial advisors send referral thank you gifts?

Check your firm's rules first. At a FINRA member broker-dealer, Rule 3220 limits what a member firm and its people may give anyone in relation to the business of the recipient's employer; the limit rose from $100 to $300 per person per year on March 30, 2026 (FINRA Regulatory Notice 26-05). Ask your compliance team before you send.

Should referral gifts carry our logo?

Your name on the note matters more. Printed packaging, branded ribbon and inserts are available where the gift allows; branding needs 4 to 6 weeks and can raise the minimum, so it suits a standing monthly order.

Can we send referral gifts every month?

Yes. Send one spreadsheet a month with each referrer's name, address and note, and each gift ships to its own address. Minimums are typically 10 units per product.
