Thank you gifts

Thank you gifts for work, by who you're thanking

A good thank-you gift fits the favor, arrives within a week or two, and comes with a note that names what the person did. Real chocolate gifts from $22, or a hosted event the whole team shares.

When to send a thank-you gift

Soon, after the work is done, and never in the middle of a deal.

  • Within a week or two.

Close to the thing you're thanking them for, so nobody has to remember what it was.

  • After the work, not before.

After the launch, the close or the event. A gift ahead of a decision reads as a bribe.

  • Never during a bid or review.

Hold client and vendor gifts until any open bid, contract talk or performance review is over.

  • Leave time for shipping.

About 2 to 3 weeks for smaller unbranded orders, and 4 to 6 weeks for 100 or more gifts or anything branded.

  • Running late?

Send the note today and say the gift is on its way. The words matter more than the timing of the box.

What to write in the note

The note is the part people keep. Three parts, one or two sentences.

  1. 1.Name what they did.
  2. 2.Say what it made possible.
  3. 3.Say thank you, plainly.

To your team

  • You shipped it a week early and nobody worked a weekend to do it. Thank you, all of you.
  • Three new customers signed because of the demo you rebuilt. This is a small thank-you for a big lift.

To a client or partner

  • Your team's fast answers kept the rollout on schedule. Thank you for making the hard part easy.
  • Thank you for another year of working together. We're proud of what we built with you.

To a helper or mentor

  • You gave up a full afternoon to interview candidates, and your notes shaped the offer. Thank you.
  • I used your advice in my first review as a manager, and it went well. Thank you for taking the time.

Thank-you gift etiquette at work

Specific, fair and with no strings attached.

  • Name the thing.

"Thanks for covering the client call on Friday" lands harder than "thanks for everything."

  • Thank everyone who did the work.

Not only the lead. The person who stayed late on the slides counts too.

  • Same contribution, same gift.

Different gifts for the same work cause more hurt than no gift at all.

  • Check gift policies.

Clients, government contacts and many vendors limit what they can accept. When in doubt, send one shared gift to the office.

  • No strings attached.

A thank-you with an ask in it is a sales gift. Save the ask for another day.

  • Check for allergies.

Our gifts are chocolate. Check the ingredient details and ask us for an alternative for anyone who can't have it.

Thank-you gift questions

What is a good thank-you gift for work?

Something easy to enjoy and sized to the favor: a small chocolate box for covering a meeting, a full gift box for carrying a project, a shared gift or a hosted event for a team after a launch. Always add a note that names exactly what the person did.

How much should you spend on a thank-you gift?

Match it to the favor and the relationship. Under $40 covers volunteers, panelists and one gift for a whole team. $40 to $100 suits one person who carried a project or a shared team gift. Clients and partners often get $100 to $200. Our gifts run from $22 to $432.

What is a good thank-you gift for a coworker?

Keep it small and personal: their coffee order the next morning, a truffle box, or a note to their manager about what they did. Under $25 is the norm from one person. For more ideas by occasion, see our coworker gifts page.

What are good appreciation gifts for staff?

One gift that's the same for everyone who did the work, with a personal note from their manager, works better than different gifts for different people. Time off and a hosted team event are strong additions to a gift box.

When should you send a thank-you gift?

Within a week or two of the thing you're thanking someone for, and after the work is done. Hold client and vendor gifts until any open bid, contract talk or review is over. Leave 2 to 3 weeks for smaller unbranded orders and 4 to 6 weeks for 100 or more gifts or anything branded.

What should a thank-you gift note say?

Three parts: what they did, what it made possible and a plain thank you. For example: "Your team's fast answers kept the rollout on schedule. Thank you for making the hard part easy." One specific sentence beats a paragraph of general praise.

Can a team event be a thank-you gift?

Yes. A hosted virtual game or a kit workshop, where supplies ship to every guest, thanks a whole team at once and gives them an hour together. Hosted games book about 2 weeks ahead and kit workshops about 3 weeks ahead for US addresses.

Can you ship thank-you gifts to many addresses?

Yes. Send a spreadsheet of names and addresses and each gift is packed and shipped individually, in the US and internationally, with your note inside. Timing and regional shipping charges depend on the destination list.
