Lunar New Year 2027: Saturday, February 6

It begins the Year of the Goat, and New Year's Eve is Friday, February 5. The celebration runs 15 days and ends with the Lantern Festival.

Lunar New Year is celebrated by many East and Southeast Asian communities, and it is a major holiday for many Asian American families. It goes by different names:

  • Chinese New Year or Spring Festival

In China and Chinese communities around the world.

  • Tết

    In Vietnam and Vietnamese communities.

  • Seollal

    In Korea and Korean communities.

The date follows the lunar calendar, usually the second new moon after the winter solstice, so it moves every year. Date and customs from the Farmers’ Almanac Lunar New Year guide.

Lunar New Year gift etiquette, simply

Customs differ between families and countries. These four are widely shared and easy to get right.

  • Give in pairs.

Pairs of fruit are exchanged between households, and even numbers are favored. Eight is the lucky one.

  • Skip sets of four.

Four sounds like the word for death in Chinese, so it is avoided. Check the count if a gift comes in pieces.

  • Red is the color of the day.

People wear red and new clothes, and black and white clothing is avoided. A red card is an easy touch.

  • Red envelopes are a family custom.

Children get red envelopes with money in even amounts. At work, a note or chocolate fits better than cash.

Customs as described by the Farmers’ Almanac. On cash at work: IRS Publication 15-B (2026) says cash and gift cards are never a tax-free de minimis benefit for employees, so a red envelope of money counts as pay. General information only: check with your payroll provider. When in doubt, ask a colleague who celebrates what they would like, and don’t assume who does.
