Question of the day: 260 good daily questions for work

Today's question of the day is below, the same for your whole team.

Today's question

Same question for everyone today.

A daily question takes thirty seconds to answer and slowly turns a list of names into people you know. If you need questions for question of the day posts, every one here is written as a question of the day for adults at work: no wrong answers, nothing too personal.

How to run a question of the day

Five minutes to set up, then two minutes a day.

  1. Pick a home for it. A Slack or Teams channel everyone already reads, or the first two minutes of standup.
  2. Post at the same time every day. Mid-morning works: people have settled in and aren't yet buried.
  3. Answer first. Whoever posts it answers in one line. It sets the length and shows it's safe to be a little silly.
  4. Keep answers optional. Reactions count. Nobody gets chased for skipping a day.
  5. Rotate the asker. A different person posts each week. They can use the picker above or a question of their own.
  6. Bring the best ones back. Quote a great answer in a team meeting. It tells people the channel is read.

In Slack, Teams and standups

  • Slack. Make a #question-of-the-day channel and use a scheduled workflow in Workflow Builder to post a reminder each morning.
  • Microsoft Teams. Post in a team channel and ask people to reply in the thread. A recurring Power Automate flow can post the reminder for you.
  • Standups. Ask the question before the updates, one sentence each. It adds about two minutes for a team of eight.
  • Video calls. Put the question in the chat as people join and read a few answers out once everyone is in.

Running a standup rather than a channel? Our morning meeting questions are built for the first five minutes of a call, and quick yes or no questions get a whole room answering in seconds.

What makes a good question of the day

Good questions of the day have five things in common.

  • Easy to answer in one line. "What was your first job?" beats "Describe your career path."
  • No wrong answers. Opinions and stories, not knowledge tests.
  • Safe for everyone. Skip politics, religion, money, health, age and dating.
  • Mix the weight. Mostly light, with a deeper question once a week, often on Fridays.
  • Specific beats general. "Best thing you ate on a trip" gets better answers than "Do you like food?"

Question of the day FAQ

What is a question of the day?

It's one short, open question posted to a team each day, in a chat channel, a standup or a classroom, that everyone can answer in a line or two. It's a low-effort way for people to learn about each other without a meeting.

What is a good question of the day for adults?

One that anyone can answer in a sentence and that invites a story: "What's the best trip you've ever taken?", "What's a skill you'd love to learn in a weekend?" or "What was your first job?" Keep it light most days and skip anything personal like money, health or politics.

How do you pick today's question?

Use the picker at the top of this page. It chooses a question from today's date, so everyone who opens the page today sees the same one. Pick a category, press Another one for a different question, and Copy to paste it into Slack or Teams.

How do I run a question of the day in Slack or Teams?

Create a dedicated channel, post one question at the same time each day and answer it yourself first. In Slack, a scheduled Workflow Builder workflow can post a reminder; in Teams, a recurring Power Automate flow can. Ask people to reply in the thread to keep the channel tidy.

Should a question of the day be mandatory?

No. Keep it optional and let a reaction count as taking part. It works because it's easy and fun; chasing people turns it into a chore.

How many questions do I need for a year?

About 250 for every workday. This page has 260 across fun, work, deep, food, travel and seasonal questions, and the seasonal ones change with the time of year.

Can I use these questions in a standup or morning meeting?

Yes. Ask before the updates and keep answers to one sentence each. For a team of eight it adds about two minutes and makes the rest of the meeting warmer.
