Yes and no questions are the fastest icebreaker there is: nobody has to think of an answer, and the whole room can reply at once with a hand, a thumbs up or a poll. The fun comes after, when you ask one yes to tell the story. Every question below is safe to ask coworkers.

4 yes or no games to play with a team

Each game uses the questions for yes or no above and works in a conference room or on a video call, with no other prep.

  1. 1. Stand up, sit down

Read a question. Everyone who would answer yes stands up (on a video call, raise a hand or turn your camera thumb up). Ask one yes and one no for a 20-second story, then read the next.

Try it with: Have you ever met someone famous?

  2. 2. Guess the room

Before a question is answered, one person predicts how many people will say yes. Closest guess wins a point. On Slack or Teams, post the question as a poll and reveal the count at lunch.

Try it with: Do you sleep with socks on?

  3. 3. 20 questions

One person thinks of a famous person, place or object. Everyone else gets 20 yes or no questions to work out what it is. Whoever guesses it picks the next one.

Start with: Is it bigger than a breadbox? Is it alive? Could I buy it at a store?

  4. 4. Don't say yes or no

One person answers rapid-fire questions for 60 seconds without saying yes, no, yeah or nope, and without nodding. Everyone else fires questions from this list to trip them up. Longest streak wins.

The trap: Did you just say yes? (Answer: “I did not.”)

Want one person to field every question instead? That’s the hot seat game, and our list has 100 questions to fire at them.

How to use yes or no questions in a meeting

  • Ask for a show of hands, a reaction emoji or a poll, so everyone answers in one second.
  • Follow every yes with one person's story. The question is the setup; the story is the point.
  • Pick five questions for a 10-minute warm-up. Twenty is a game, not a warm-up.
  • Let people pass. Nobody owes the room a story.
  • Rotate who reads. The person who reads picks the next question.

Need a different kind of question? Try our would you rather questions, this or that questions, icebreaker questions, what if questions and true or false questions.

Yes or no questions FAQ

What are good yes or no questions to ask?

Good yes or no questions are quick to answer and lead to a story: Have you ever met someone famous? Can you play an instrument? Have you ever lived in another country? Ask for a show of hands, then let one yes explain. This page has 150, grouped by funny, work, get to know you, food, travel, hypothetical and thoughtful.

What are some funny yes or no questions?

Try ones most people secretly answer yes to: Have you ever waved back at someone who was waving at the person behind you? Have you ever pushed a door that said pull? Do you sing in the car when you're alone? Is a hot dog a sandwich? The funny section above has 25.

How do you play the yes or no game?

In the classic version, one person answers rapid-fire questions for 60 seconds without saying yes or no, and without nodding. Everyone else tries to trip them up. Another popular version is stand up, sit down: read a question and everyone who would answer yes stands.

What is a yes or no question called?

It's a closed-ended question, also called a polar question: it can be answered with a single yes or no. Open-ended questions (what, why, how) invite longer answers. In a team meeting, closed questions get everyone answering fast and open follow-ups get the stories.

Are yes or no questions good icebreakers?

Yes, especially for new or quiet groups, because answering takes one second and nobody has to speak first. Pair them with a follow-up for one or two people. For questions that ask for longer answers, see our icebreaker questions and get to know you questions.

Can you play yes or no games on Zoom or Teams?

Yes. Use raised hands, reactions or the built-in poll for votes, and the chat for 20 questions. For a remote team, posting one yes or no question a day in Slack or Teams works well too. More ideas are in our team meeting games guide.

Can KraftyLab host a game for our team?

Yes. Our hosts run game shows and trivia for about an hour on Zoom by default (Teams, Google Meet or Webex on request), or in person at your office in 17 US cities. Book about 2 weeks ahead, or get a free quote with your date and headcount.
