How to run a scavenger hunt at work

  1. Pick 20 to 30 items. Take some from every list. All 60 is too many for one hunt; save the rest for next time.
  2. Draw the map. Say which floors and rooms are in play, and list the no-go zones out loud.
  3. Make mixed teams. Split departments up on purpose. Meeting new people is the team building part.
  4. Set up photo drop-offs. One chat thread or shared album per team, so you can score as photos arrive.
  5. Start a 45-minute clock. Hand each team a printed list and stay at base to answer questions.
  6. Score, show, celebrate. Tally points, put the best photos on the big screen, and give the winners something real.

Rules to read out before you start

  • Teams of 3 to 5, mixed across departments.
  • Every find needs a photo with a teammate in it.
  • Find, don't take: nothing leaves its spot.
  • No drawers, no private offices, no unplugging anything.
  • Stay out of meetings and away from anyone on a call.
  • Everyone back at base when the timer ends; late teams lose 5 points.
  • The organizer's call on any photo is final.

Scoring and prizes

Score photos as they arrive so the winner is ready the moment the clock stops.

Office scavenger hunt FAQ

What are good office scavenger hunt ideas?

How do you organize a scavenger hunt at work?

Pick 20 to 30 items, set the boundaries and no-go zones, split people into mixed teams of 3 to 5, and give each team a printed list and a chat thread for photos. Run it for 45 minutes, then score the photos and show the best ones on a big screen.

How long should an office scavenger hunt take?

45 minutes of hunting plus 15 minutes for scoring and photos fits a one-hour slot. For a lunch break, use 10 to 15 items and 20 minutes.

How do you score a scavenger hunt?

Give 1 point for a simple find, 2 for a photo challenge or a solved riddle, and 3 for a team task. Take 5 points off teams that come back late, and break ties with a vote for the best photo.

Can remote or hybrid teams do an office scavenger hunt?

Yes. The at-your-desk items work at home, so mixed teams can share one list. For a fully remote team, use these virtual scavenger hunt ideas, or book a hosted virtual scavenger hunt that runs on Zoom.

What are good scavenger hunt riddles for the office?

Riddles that point to objects every office has: the stapler, the printer, the coffee machine, a whiteboard. For example: "I wake the whole office up every morning, but I've never had a sip myself." (The coffee machine.) There are 12 with answers on this page.

Small, visible prizes beat expensive ones: a trophy that passes to the next winning team, first pick of next week's lunch spot, gift cards, or leaving early on a Friday.
