Holiday out of office messages: 50 templates with subject lines
Copy a reply for Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year or a whole-office closure. Every template has a subject line, sorted by holiday and situation.

A good holiday out of office message gives your return date, says who can help and adds one warm line. Below are 50 templates sorted by holiday, each marked for your own time off or the whole office, and for clients or coworkers. This season, Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026, and Christmas Day on Friday, December 25, 2026.
Holiday dates for the 2026-27 season
Check these before you type a return date. When a federal holiday falls on a weekend, many employers give the nearest weekday off instead.
| Holiday | Date | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Thanksgiving Day | Thu, Nov 26 | Federal holiday |
| Day after Thanksgiving | Fri, Nov 27 | Not federal; some employers give it off |
| Christmas Eve | Thu, Dec 24 | Not a federal holiday |
| Christmas Day | Fri, Dec 25 | Federal holiday |
| New Year's Eve | Thu, Dec 31 | Not a federal holiday |
| New Year's Day | Fri, Jan 1 | Federal holiday |
| Martin Luther King Jr. Day | Mon, Jan 18 | Federal holiday |
How to write a holiday out of office message
- Lead with the return date. It's the one thing every sender needs. Write the weekday too: “Monday, January 4”.
- Say if the whole office is closed. Then nobody waits on a colleague who is also off.
- Default to “holiday break” for clients. Name Christmas or another holiday when you know your readers share it.
- Skip travel plans and home details. “Away for the holidays” is enough, especially outside your company.
- Set an end date. Set the last day you're off as the end date, so the reply stops on its own.
