Origami

Some origami history, the basic folds, then designs step by step. Papers and a folding stick ship to each guest.

1 hour

Why teams book origami

  • A small, flat kit with nothing to plug in, melt or water.
  • Quiet and hands-on: no competition, and nobody is put on the spot.
  • Some culture in the hour: the instructor opens with origami history.
  • A good fit for AAPI Heritage Month in May, next to our heritage month events.

Virtual origami class questions

How does a virtual origami class work?

Every guest gets an origami kit at home before the day. On the call, a live instructor shares a little origami history, teaches the basic folds and then walks everyone through designs step by step. It runs 60 minutes on Zoom by default, or Teams, Google Meet or Webex, and ends with show and tell.

How much does a virtual origami class cost per person?

Origami is $25 a person plus a $379 base fee: $1,004 in total for 25 guests, about $41 a person. The kit and continental US shipping are included, and a 50% deposit holds the date.

What's in the origami kit, and what do guests need at home?

Origami papers in a variety of colors for several designs, and a popsicle stick for sharp creases. Guests need only access to the video call and a table to fold on: no tools, glue or scissors.

Do origami kits ship to Canada or outside the US?

Continental US shipping is included. Alaska, Hawaii and US territories add $75 a guest, Canada $60 a guest and international addresses $45 a guest. With guests outside the US, book about 5 weeks ahead to allow for customs and delivery.

How far ahead should we book an origami workshop?

Book at least 21 days ahead. Guests' addresses are due 14 days before the class, and kits are expected at least 3 days before it. Rescheduling is free up to 2 days before the event.

Is origami hard for beginners?

The class starts with the basics: the instructor teaches basic folding techniques first, then walks everyone through each design step by step on camera. Anyone who gets stuck holds their paper up to the camera for help.

Is an origami class a good AAPI Heritage Month activity?

It can be one part of it. Origami is the art of paper folding most closely tied to Japan (the Japanese word joins ori, to fold, and kami, paper), and the class opens with some of its history. AAPI Heritage Month is in May; pair the class with AAPI heritage trivia, or see our heritage month events for the full year.

Can a large team in different offices and time zones join?

Yes. Each guest gets their own kit at their own address. If the team spans time zones, book two sessions so everyone folds in their own workday. For an office group, put one screen in the room that the instructor can see and hear.
