Easy openers everyone can play

Start here. A first round every team scores on keeps the whole room in the game.

Harder rounds for competitive teams

Save one of these for the middle or the final, when teams are warmed up and want a fight.

  • Hard trivia: 100 stumpers for the know-it-alls.
  • Bar trivia: Two ready-to-run pub quiz nights.
  • Riddles: 120 riddles with answers for a brain teaser round.

Pop culture, music and sports

The rounds people talk about afterward. Pair one with a general round so nobody feels left out.

Funny rounds

Wrong answers get a laugh here, which is the point. Good after a hard round.

Work, food and nature

Topics close to everyday life, so a team of new hires and veterans plays on even terms.

What makes the best trivia questions

Good topics only go so far. Questions decide whether people groan or argue happily. Four fixes, each shown before and after.

  1. 1. Ask for one answer.

Before: “Name a planet with rings.” Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune all have rings, so you end up judging four answers.

After: “Which planet's rings can you see through a small backyard telescope?” Answer: Saturn.

  2. 2. Give hard questions a hint.

Before: “Which letter appears in no US state name?” Most teams leave it blank, and a blank is no fun to mark.

After: “Only one letter of the alphabet appears in no US state name. Hint: it almost always comes with a U.” Answer: Q.

  3. 3. Pin answers that change to a year.

Before: “What is the most populous country in the world?” The answer changed in 2023, so teams who learned it earlier write the old one.

After: “Which country did the UN expect to pass China in April 2023 as the world's most populous?” Answer: India.

  4. 4. Make it short enough to hear once.

Before: “In the long-running animated sitcom set in the town of Springfield, what is the name of the man who owns the bar the dad visits?” By the end of the question people have forgotten the start.

After: “On The Simpsons, who runs the neighborhood bar?” Answer: Moe.

Population answer source: India to overtake China as world's most populous country in April 2023, United Nations projects (opens in a new tab), UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, April 24, 2023.

Trivia topics FAQ

What are good trivia topics for adults?

Start with topics every adult has met: general knowledge, movies and TV, music, food, sports and work life. Add one harder round for competitive teams and one seasonal round tied to the date, like Thanksgiving in November or winter in December.

How many trivia categories should a quiz have?

Four to six. A 30-minute quiz fits four rounds of five questions, and a 60-minute quiz fits five rounds of ten with time for scoring. Give each round its own topic and format so the same team doesn't win every round.

What makes the best trivia questions?

One clear answer, a question short enough to hear once, a hint when it's hard, and a year attached to any answer that can change. Mix easy and hard in every round so every team scores.

Where can I find trivia questions with answers?

Every one of the 35 topics on this page links to a KraftyLab page of questions with answers. For a sample question from 100 more categories, see our trivia categories list.

What trivia categories work for a holiday party?

Winter, general holiday trivia, food and New Year's work for most teams. Add a Christmas movie round if your team celebrates it, or swap in general knowledge if it doesn't.

Can someone host trivia for our team?

Yes. KraftyLab books live-hosted virtual trivia that runs about 60 minutes on Zoom, or Teams, Google Meet or Webex on request. Book about 2 weeks ahead.
