How to write your own comical multiple choice questions

Every question on this page uses one formula: four options, three jobs.

  • One real answer: short, checkable, and stated as plainly as the other three.
  • One near miss: the answer people half-believe, so the question still makes them think.
  • Two absurd options: the laugh lines. Same length and tone as the real answer, so nothing gives it away.

Three before and after examples

  1. How many legs does a spider have?

    Before
    A. 6 · B. 8 · C. 10 · D. 12
    After
    A. 6, it's a minimalist · B. 8 · C. 47, but it's shy about it · D. Depends on its mood
  2. Which instrument has 88 keys?

    Before
    A. Piano · B. Organ · C. Harp · D. Guitar
    After
    A. An accordion · B. A very large keyring · C. A piano · D. The office keyboard
  3. What do bees make?

    Before
    A. Honey · B. Milk · C. Syrup · D. Jam
    After
    A. Maple syrup · B. Honey · C. Small talk · D. Excellent decisions

Four rules that keep it funny

  • Never make the real answer the funniest option. The laugh goes to a wrong one.
  • Move the right answer around: A, B, C and D should each be right about a quarter of the time.
  • Joke about objects, animals and offices, never about a person in the room.
  • Check the real answer twice. A funny quiz with a wrong answer just becomes an argument.

How to run a funny multiple choice quiz at work

The play mode at the top does the scoring. Here's the rest.

  • Teams of three to five, each with four colored cards or a chat to type a letter in.
  • Read the question and all four options out loud, then count down from five.
  • Everyone shows a letter at once, then reveal the answer and read the one-line note.
  • Ten questions take about 15 minutes. Use a poll question as the tiebreaker: the team that guesses the room's top pick wins.

Want someone to run this for your team?

A live host brings the questions, the slides, the scoring and the jokes, so you get to play too. Quiz Showdown! races teams against the clock, and Trivia with a Twist! mixes up the kinds of challenges. Both run an hour on Zoom (Teams, Google Meet or Webex on request); book about 2 weeks ahead. Teams split across time zones can run it as two sessions, and December dates fill first. For buzzers and TV-style rounds, see our virtual game shows. Funny multiple choice questions FAQ

What are some funny multiple choice questions?

Try these: What is a baby hedgehog called? (A spikelet, a hoglet, a prickle pup or Kevin; it's a hoglet.) Where was Hawaiian pizza invented? (Hawaii, Naples, a moon base or Canada; it's Canada.) The joke lives in the wrong options, and the real answer is still a true fact.

How do you write a funny multiple choice question?

Start with a true fact, then write one near miss people might believe and two absurd options. Keep all four options about the same length so nothing gives the answer away, and rotate the right answer between A, B, C and D.

What are good multiple choice questions to ask friends or coworkers?

Poll questions with no wrong answer, like “What's the ideal meeting length?” or “If our team were a sandwich, what would we be?”, with four options that all make a fun answer. This page has 25 of them, ready to paste into a chat poll.

How many options should a multiple choice question have?

Four is the standard for quizzes and works with most quiz apps. Three works for fast rounds read out loud. For a funny quiz, four gives you room for the real answer, a near miss and two jokes.

Can I use these in Kahoot, Google Forms or Slido?

Yes. Every question has four short options, which fits a standard quiz question in all three. Copy a section into your tool and mark the right answer. For more tools, see our Kahoot alternatives.

What's a fun multiple choice quiz for work?

Play ten questions from this page on a shared screen: teams lock a letter, you reveal the answer, and the scoreboard keeps count. It takes about 15 minutes. For a full hour with a professional host, book a hosted virtual trivia game.

Can I print these funny multiple choice questions with answers?

Yes. The print button under the game prints every question with its four options, then the answer key on a separate page, so the quiz sheet can go to players and the key stays with the host.
