How to run an easy trivia game at work

Twenty minutes, teams of three to five, one reader and one scorekeeper. Here's the plan.

  1. Minutes 0 to 2: count off. Count off into teams of three to five, so friends end up apart. Each team picks a name and one person to write.
  2. Minutes 2 to 8: round one. Read ten questions from one category on this page, twice each, with 20 seconds to answer. Easy questions go fast, so keep the pace up.
  3. Minutes 8 to 10: swap and score. Teams swap sheets and mark each other's. One point per right answer, read aloud.
  4. Minutes 10 to 17: round two. Ten questions from a different category, or play the quiz above on a shared screen and let the room shout.
  5. Minutes 17 to 20: tiebreaker and winner. If two teams tie, ask one question at a time and take the first right answer. Announce the winner and move on while the energy is high.

Keep it easy and fun

  • Keep the pace quick. Easy trivia works because nobody sits in silence for long.
  • Accept close spellings and obvious short forms. It's the fact that counts.
  • Mix categories, so the person who knows animals and the person who knows movies both get a moment.
  • Save two or three harder questions for the tiebreaker, so a tie doesn't drag on.
  • On a video call, have each team send answers to the host by private chat.
