March Madness at work: a free bracket, office games and watch party ideas
Run a free bracket with prizes that aren't cash, add a few short office games and keep watch parties optional. The 2027 tournament starts with Selection Sunday on March 14; the First Round is Thursday, March 18.

March Madness at work works best in three parts: a free bracket challenge with no money pool, a few five-minute office games so people who don't follow basketball have something to win, and short, optional watch parties during the First Round on Thursday, March 18 and Friday, March 19, 2027. Add one hosted game during tournament week if you want the whole team on the same call.
How to run a free bracket challenge at work
Ten minutes of setup the Monday after Selection Sunday, then one update a week.
- Make a free private group. Most big sports sites run free bracket games with private groups. Create one for the office and post the link in a team channel the Monday after Selection Sunday.
- Set one deadline, with a time zone. Brackets are due before the men's First Round starts on Thursday, March 18. Say the time and the zone in the invite so the West Coast isn't caught out.
- Keep the scoring simple. Points double each round: 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32. Tiebreaker: total points scored in the men's championship game.
- Offer the women's bracket too. Run both and let people enter one or both. Two winners means twice the bragging and a second chance for anyone whose bracket breaks on day one.
- Post standings on Fridays. One short update a week: the leader, the best upset call and the bracket that broke first. Keep scores out of the main work channels.
- Award prizes that aren't cash. The winner gets bragging rights and something small from the list below. Nothing anyone pays into.
Why the bracket should be free
- Entry fees and cash prizes can make a pool count as gambling under state law, and the rules differ from state to state.
- A buy-in splits the office into people who pay and people who sit out. Free means everyone can play.
- The person who picks by mascot has the same shot as the person who watched every game in February.
- If your company has a policy on gambling or contests, follow it. When in doubt, ask HR before you send the link.
Prizes that aren't cash
- A traveling desk trophy the winner keeps until next March.
- The winner chooses where the team eats next.
- A morning with no meetings, approved by their manager.
- Choosing the theme of the next team event.
- Their name in the team channel's description for a month.
- A consolation prize for the bracket that broke first.
Want one game the whole team plays?
A bracket keeps people checking scores on their own. One hosted hour during tournament week puts fans and non-fans on the same call, in the office or at home, and a live host runs every round so the organizer plays too. In Your Favorite Game Shows, every team plays each round at the same time, so nobody waits for a turn. Hosted games book about 2 weeks ahead.

Watch party rules for remote and hybrid teams
The First Round falls on a Thursday and a Friday, so most offices end up with a game on somewhere. A few rules keep it fun and fair.
- Keep it optional and around lunch. First Round games run through the workday on Thursday, March 18 and Friday, March 19.
- Everyone watches on their own screen. The video call or channel is for reactions, not for sharing the broadcast.
- Mind the time zones: a noon Eastern tip-off is 9 a.m. Pacific.
- Customers and deadlines come first. Set an away status and keep cameras optional.
- If you buy lunch for the people in the office, give remote people the same budget.
- Put the women's tournament on too. Its First Round runs Friday, March 19 and Saturday, March 20.
- Nobody has to care about basketball. A poll or a game gives non-fans something to do besides watch.
