How to run Super Bowl trivia at work

Thirty minutes on the Friday before the game, a reader, a scorekeeper and teams of four to six.

  1. First three minutes: pick teams. Mix fans and non-fans on every team. Each team picks a name and one person to write the answers.
  2. Next eight minutes: Round 1. Read each question twice, about 45 seconds apart. Ten questions take about eight minutes with the answers.
  3. Then eight minutes: Round 4. The halftime and commercials round keeps the people who watch for the show in the game.
  4. Another eight minutes: your pick. History, MVPs or big plays, whichever your group groaned for loudest. Read the answers after each round.
  5. Last three minutes: the final question. One hard question worth five points. Closest answer wins any tie. Crown the champions and post the score in the team channel.

In the office, hybrid or on video

  • In the office: one reader at the front, answers on paper or a small whiteboard, and a scorekeeper who isn't on a team.
  • Hybrid: the room is one or two teams; remote people form their own teams in breakout rooms. Read from a shared screen so everyone sees the same question.
  • All on video: put each team in a breakout room for 60 seconds per question, or have them send answers to the host by private chat.
  • Pace: plan about eight minutes per round of ten, answers included. Three rounds fill a 30-minute slot.

Expecting 50 or more people on one call? Reading questions aloud gets slow at that size. A host with a phone leaderboard, like Winter Showdown, lets everyone answer at once.
