Team building for project teams
Team building for a project team works best at three moments: a kickoff game in week 1, when people meet for the first time; a puzzle or reset at the midpoint milestone; and a celebration in the final week, before people roll off. Each is a 60-minute hosted event on your video call.

A three-moment plan for one project
A project team is put together for a goal and a date, then breaks up. One event can't do three jobs, so plan one hosted hour for each.
Week 1
Kickoff: people meet for the first time
Learn names, roles and one thing about each person before the first deadline.Midpoint
Midpoint: the milestone or the slump
Mark the milestone, reset energy and practice working together under a clock.Final week
Closeout: celebrate, then let go
Thank everyone who worked on it, including the part-timers, before people roll off.
A permanent team that just formed needs a 90-day plan instead: see team building for new teams. Mixing departments that work together all year? See cross-functional team building.

Put the three events on the project plan
Treat them as milestones, not extras. Here is a six-month project that kicks off in January 2027.
- Put all three on the project plan at kickoff. As milestones on the schedule, they survive the first slip.
- Budget them with the project. Three hosted hours is a line in the project budget, not a request to HR halfway through.
- Never the week before a deadline. Place the midpoint event just after a milestone review, when the pressure has dropped.
- Book with the stricter lead time. About 2 weeks for a hosted game, about 3 for a kit workshop to US addresses, about 5 with anyone in Canada or abroad.
- Keep the same breakout teams for the kickoff game and the first working session. People start the work already knowing their teammates.
Week 1
Kickoff game: Thursday, January 21, 2027
The project starts the week of January 18. Hold the hosted game in week 1, after roles are set. Book by Thursday, January 7, 2027, or before the winter break if your team is out.Month 3
Midpoint puzzle: Thursday, April 15, 2027
The day after the phase review, not the week before a deadline. A hosted escape room or mystery. Book by Thursday, April 1, 2027.Final week
Closeout workshop: Thursday, June 24, 2027
After go-live, before people roll off on July 1. A kit workshop needs about 3 weeks for US addresses: book by Thursday, June 3, 2027, or by Thursday, May 20, 2027 with anyone in Canada or abroad.
Who counts as the project team
The roster is wider than the people at the daily standup. These are the groups to put on the invite list.
The core team
Full-time on the project. They come to all three events, and the kickoff is built around them.Part-time experts on loan
Legal, security, finance or data people at 20% of their week. Invite them to the kickoff and the closeout at least; they are the first to be forgotten.Contractors and vendor staff
Often half the delivery team. Ask the account owner early whether they can join, and include them in the headcount.Client-side members
On a client project, a joint kickoff game puts both sides on mixed teams before the first status meeting. The sponsor
Plays at the kickoff and says thank you at the closeout. Five minutes of remarks, then they are just a player.People in other offices
Run everything on the video call, even when half the team is in one room, so remote members are never the overflow.
Run the closeout so it actually closes
The closeout is the event most projects skip, because by then everyone has moved on. Five rules keep it on the calendar and make it count.
- Do the lessons-learned review first, on a separate call. The celebration should not double as the retro.
- Hold it before anyone rolls off. Once people move to the next project, the date slips and half the team misses it.
- Name every contributor. Read the full list, part-timers and contractors included, in the first five minutes.
- Ship something people keep. A kit workshop leaves each person with a painting or a candle from the project.
- End with a launch? If the project ends in a product going live, the virtual launch party plan covers the go-live day itself.
What it costs for a project team of 8, 15 or 30
A hosted game is one package for up to 25 people, so most project teams pay one clear price. A kit workshop grows with each person.

Project team building questions
What is the best team building for a project team?
Plan three hosted hours instead of one: a kickoff game in week 1 so people learn each other's names and roles, a puzzle or reset at the midpoint milestone, and a celebration in the final week before people roll off. Each runs about 60 minutes with a live host on your video call.
What are good project kickoff team building activities?
Games that reveal people rather than test knowledge: a timed discovery challenge, a poll game where you guess how the room answered, or creative mini-games with rotating groups. Play in the same breakout teams you will use for the first working session.
When should a project team do team building?
At three moments: the first week of the project, just after the midpoint milestone review, and the final week before anyone moves to the next project. Avoid the week before a deadline. Put all three on the project plan at kickoff.
How is this different from team building for a new team?
Can contractors and client staff join?
Yes. Count them in the headcount and send them the same invite. Ask their account owner early whether they can take part, and for a kit workshop collect their shipping addresses with everyone else's.
How much does team building for a project team cost?
Hosted games are one package for up to 25 people, so a project team of 8 to 15 pays one price. Kit workshops are a base fee plus a price per kit, with continental US shipping included. Team Discovery Challenge is $35 a person for a group of 25 ($875 package). Painting is $54 a person plus a $379 base fee. Every card on this page shows its live price, and you see the full total before you book.
How far ahead do I book?
About 2 weeks for a hosted game and about 3 weeks for a kit workshop shipped to US addresses. With anyone in Canada or abroad, book about 5 weeks ahead so addresses are in 4 weeks before the event.
