Cross-functional team building
Cross-functional team building works when you mix departments on purpose: build breakout teams with one person each from sales, product, operations, finance and support, pick a game where different skills win, and have leaders play as teammates. One hosted hour a quarter, tied to a kickoff or a program review, keeps the new connections from fading.

The departments that rarely share a meeting
Silos form along handoffs: the places where one team's work becomes another team's problem. These are the pairs worth putting on the same side.
Sales and finance
They meet over discount approvals at quarter end. One hour on the same team makes the next approval a call, not a ticket.Support and product
Support hears every complaint first and rarely gets invited. Put a support lead and a product manager on one team.Operations and sales
Sales promises it, ops delivers it. They know each other by email subject lines, not by name.Marketing and sales
The lead handoff is where blame lands. A shared win in a game is a better first conversation.Finance and every budget owner
Budget season is the only time most teams talk to finance. Meet them before the spreadsheet does.HQ and the other offices
Same job, different building. Spread each office across teams so nobody plays with only their own site.

How to mix teams on purpose
The game matters less than who sits on each team. Left alone, people join the breakout room with the faces they know. Six rules for the roster.
- Build the teams yourself, from a roster. Add a department column to your guest list, make the split, and ask the host to use it for the breakout rooms. Random rooms can put three people from one team together.
- One department per seat. Aim for teams of five or six with no two people from the same team, so sales, product, ops, finance and support each sit at the table.
- Name teams after anything but departments. Colors, cities or snacks. "Team Finance" defeats the point.
- Split managers from their own reports. People speak up more when their boss is on another team.
- Spread remote people across teams. A team of only remote players feels like the overflow room.
- Reshuffle once. Scavenger Hunt and Office Olympics can switch teams at the midpoint, so everyone meets twice as many people.

Put the game inside a project kickoff or program review
A stand-alone social hour is easy to skip. A game on the kickoff agenda, played in the same teams that then do the work, is not.
For a group that keeps talking past each other, add a facilitated hour like Psychological Safety in the Workplace to the next review.

Why we are here
The sponsor names the goal, the date and the one decision the group owns. Five minutes of slides at most.0:15 to 1:15
The hosted game, in mixed teams
A live host runs a trivia game or an escape room. The same mixed teams you will use for the working session.1:15 to 1:30
Break
People keep talking to the teammates they just played with. That is the point.1:30 to 2:30
Working session, same teams
Each team maps one handoff: who sends what, to whom, and what good looks like. Teams already know each other's names.2:30 to 2:45
Readouts and owners
One minute per team, then owners and dates for each handoff. End on time.
Leaders join as players
Cross-functional work stalls when people wait for their own boss's view. An hour where the VP is just another teammate resets that.
- Leaders play on a team, not on the stage. A VP solving a puzzle next to a support rep says more than a welcome speech.
- One leader per team, at most. Two executives on one team turns it into a meeting.
- The host runs the room. Nobody has to watch the boss for cues, and the boss gets to relax too.
- Keep remarks under five minutes. Say why the group exists, then hand it to the host.
- No scorekeeping by department. The leaderboard shows team names only.

What our clients say

Cross-functional team building questions
What is the best team building for cross-functional teams?
A 60-minute hosted game where you assign mixed breakout teams yourself, one person per department in each team of five or six. Pick a format where different skills win, such as trivia with mixed categories, an escape room or a scavenger hunt, and have leaders play as teammates.
What activities help break down silos between departments?
Anything that puts people from different departments on the same side with a shared goal: escape rooms and mysteries, trivia with challenges beyond right answers, and timed scavenger hunts. The format matters less than the teams, so build them from your roster instead of letting breakout rooms form at random.
How do you split people into mixed teams?
Add a department column to your guest list, then build teams of five or six with no two people from the same team, managers apart from their own reports and remote people spread out. Ask the host to use your split for the breakout rooms. Some games can reshuffle teams at the midpoint.
Should leaders join cross-functional team building?
Yes, as players. Put at most one leader on each team, keep any remarks under five minutes and let the host run the room. A leader solving a puzzle beside a support rep does more for cross-team trust than a speech.
Can we add a game to a project kickoff or program review?
Yes. Run the hosted game early, in the same mixed teams you will use for the working session, then move straight into the work. A 2 hour 45 minute kickoff fits a 15-minute intro, a 60-minute game, a break, an hour of work and readouts.
How much does cross-functional team building cost?
Most hosted games are one package for up to 25 people, with added guests in blocks. Trivia with a Twist! is $39 a person for a group of 25 ($975 package). Beach Vacate-tion Escape Room is $35 a person for a group of 25 ($875 package). Every card on this page shows its live price, and you see the full total before you book.
When do I need to book for a December 2026 event?
Hosted games need about 2 weeks, so for Tuesday, December 15, 2026, book by Tuesday, December 1, 2026. Kit workshops need about 3 weeks for US addresses and about 5 with anyone in Canada or abroad.
