Team building for nonprofits
Team building for nonprofits should cost little, bring staff and volunteers into the same hour, and land on a date that matters, like the week after Giving Tuesday or National Volunteer Week. A hosted game is one price for up to 25 guests; a kit workshop is a base fee plus a price per kit.

What nonprofit team building costs
Two ways to pay, and the cheaper one depends on your headcount.
For a small group, the lowest-priced kits cost less than a game package, because you pay a base fee plus each kit. Origami for 10 comes to $629.
From about 20 people, a hosted game usually wins, because the package covers up to 25 guests whether 12 or 25 come. You're On Mute! is $850 for up to 25.

Staff and volunteer appreciation in one event
Most nonprofits run on a small paid staff and a bigger circle of volunteers. Four things that make one event work for both.
Count everyone as a guest
Prices go by headcount, and volunteers count the same as staff. A game package covers up to 25 guests, so a staff of 12 can bring 13 volunteers at no extra cost.Pick a time volunteers can make
Most volunteers have day jobs. A weekday evening or a Saturday morning works better than the middle of a workday.Games for people you rarely see
A hosted game needs only a video link. Kits need a home address for every guest, so save them for the people you know well.Team play over spotlight
Trivia and game shows are played in small teams, so a new volunteer and the executive director can be on the same side.

A thank-you after Giving Tuesday
Giving Tuesday is December 1, 2026. For a celebration the next Tuesday, December 8, book a hosted game by November 24 and a kit workshop by November 17, 2026. Ideas for the party itself are on the virtual holiday party page.Jan 12, 2027
After the year-end campaign
Most year-end appeals close December 31. A January event thanks the team once the receipts are out. For Tuesday, January 12, 2027, book a hosted game by December 29, 2026.Apr 18 to 24, 2027
National Volunteer Week
Points of Light runs National Volunteer Week each April, usually the third full week; in 2027 that is April 18 to 24, so check their page for the final dates. For a Tuesday, April 20 event, book a kit workshop by March 30 and a hosted game by April 6, 2027.June 2027
Before a June 30 fiscal year end
Many nonprofits close their books on June 30. If this year's staff line still has money in it, an event on or before Wednesday, June 30, 2027 means booking a hosted game by June 16.
Grants, restricted funds and who pays
A nonprofit can't spend money the way a company does. Check these before you book; this is general information, not accounting advice.
- Grant money is often restricted to the program it funds. Ask your finance lead which fund can pay for a staff event before you book.
- Staff and volunteer events usually come from unrestricted or general operating funds, or a line in the volunteer program budget.
- A board member or local business may want to sponsor the night. Ask us for a quote you can send them.
- Pay by card with a 50% deposit, or by invoice against a purchase order.
- A free team account keeps every booking in one place, so next year's planner can see what you did.
Board retreats and small teams
Two groups most nonprofits have, and what suits each.
The board retreat
Put one hosted hour after the strategy session, when the room needs a reset: a trivia game, or a skill session like Goal Setting & Goal Getting. For the rest of the agenda, see retreat activities and leadership team building.A staff of 5 to 12
Small teams pay the same game package as 25 people, so a kit or a free activity often makes more sense. Prices for 5, 10 and 20 people are on team building for small groups.
Nonprofit team building questions
What is good team building for nonprofits?
Something low cost that staff and volunteers can join together, run by a live host so nobody on a small team has to plan it. A hosted virtual game is one package for up to 25 guests, and a kit workshop is a base fee plus a price per kit, with continental US shipping included.
What does it cost for a small nonprofit team?
For a team of 10, the Origami kit workshop comes to $629 in total, with shipping to continental US addresses included. The hosted game You're On Mute is $850 for up to 25 guests. Each activity page shows the price for your exact headcount.
Can volunteers join the same event as staff?
Yes. Every guest counts toward the headcount the same way, staff or volunteer. Hosted games only need a video link, so they suit volunteers best; kits need a home address for each guest.
What are good volunteer appreciation event ideas?
A hosted gratitude game or trivia night on a weekday evening, a card-making workshop where volunteers make thank-you cards, or a celebration during National Volunteer Week, expected April 18 to 24, 2027.
Can we use grant money to pay for it?
It depends on the grant. Restricted grants usually pay only for the program they fund, so staff events tend to come from unrestricted funds. Check with your finance lead or the funder before you book.
Do you send an invoice for our records?
Yes. You can reserve with a 50% deposit by card, or ask for a quote and pay by invoice against a purchase order. A free team account keeps every booking in one place.
