Team building for multigenerational teams
Team building for a multigenerational team works best with formats where age is not an advantage: game show, film and music rounds that draw on several decades, and hands-on kit workshops where everyone starts from zero. Mix ages on every team, send one join link that works on a phone or a laptop, and leave out anything built on generational stereotypes.

What makes an activity work for every age
A team that spans Gen Z to boomers is not one audience, and it is not five. These six choices keep anyone from sitting out.

Getting everyone into the room, whatever their tech comfort
Comfort with video tools varies with the person, not the birth year. Plan for everyone, and nobody gets singled out.
- One link, in the calendar invite. Zoom by default, or Microsoft Teams, Google Meet or Webex on request. Use the platform your team already uses every day.
- Phone or laptop, both work. Some games collect answers on a phone by QR code or in a web browser. Say so in the invite, so nobody is surprised on the day.
- Open the call ten minutes early. Anyone can drop in to check sound and video before the host starts. Offer it to everyone, not to particular people.
- A teammate on every team who knows the tool. Pick by comfort with the platform, never by age.
- Kits: a heads-up when the box arrives. Ask everyone to open it the day before and check nothing is missing.
- Half in the office? Gather the office group around one screen. See hybrid team building.
Mentoring pairs, on the same team
A mentoring program is often the one place a team's newest and longest-serving people meet on purpose. A hosted game makes the first hour easy.
Mentoring goes both ways: a mentee can teach a tool as easily as a mentor teaches the work. Running it through an employee resource group? See our ERG event ideas.
Week 1
Pairs meet at a game, on the same team
Put each mentor and mentee on one breakout team. A first conversation about a trivia answer is easier than one about career goals.Month 1
Each pair trades one skill
The mentor shares something about the work, the mentee shares something about theirs. Either one can be the expert on a tool.Month 2
A kit workshop for the whole cohort
Pairs make something side by side on camera. Book about 3 weeks ahead for US addresses.Month 3
Close with fresh pairs
A last game with the pairs mixed up, so every mentee meets more than one experienced colleague.
Skip the stereotypes
Age does not tell you who loves trivia, who is good with tech or who wants to make something with their hands. People do. Five things to leave out.
Teams split by generation
"Boomers vs Gen Z" sounds fun on a flyer and splits the room. Mix ages on every team.Jokes about any age group
No age jokes in the invite, the team names or the opening remarks. Ask the host to keep them out too.Guessing who needs help
Offer setup help to everyone. Age does not predict who struggles with a video call.A round from one era only
Ask which decades a music or film game draws on before you book. Musical Bingo, for one, plays 90s pop and rock.Labels in the program
Say "mixed teams", not "bridging the generation gap". Nobody wants to be a demographic for an hour.

Multigenerational team building questions
What is good team building for a multigenerational team?
Formats where age is not an advantage: trivia, game show and film rounds that draw on several decades, and hands-on kit workshops where everyone starts from zero. Mix ages on every breakout team, use one join link that works on a phone or a laptop, and leave out any game built on generational stereotypes.
What are good intergenerational team building activities?
A game show or film quiz with rounds from different eras, trivia that scores more than right answers, and kit workshops like terrarium making, herb gardening, cookie decorating or painting. Each runs about 60 minutes with a live host.
How do we make sure everyone can join, whatever their comfort with tech?
Send one link in the calendar invite on the platform your team already uses, say whether answers go in on a phone, and open the call ten minutes early for anyone who wants to test. Put someone who knows the tool on every team, chosen by comfort, not by age.
Should we do a generations-themed event, like boomers vs Gen Z?
We advise against it. Teams split by age turn colleagues into categories for an hour, and age jokes land badly with someone. Mix ages on every team and let the content, not the labels, span the decades.
Can we use team building in a mentoring program?
Yes. Put each mentor and mentee on the same team for a hosted game in week one, add a kit workshop for the whole cohort in month two, and close with a game where the pairs are mixed up.
How much does team building for a multigenerational team cost?
Hosted games are one package for the group, and kit workshops are a base fee plus a price per kit. Your Favorite Game Shows! is $39 a person for a group of 25 ($975 package). Terrarium Making is $84 a person plus a $379 base fee. Every card on this page shows its live price, and you see the full total before you book.
When do I need to book for a December 2026 event?
For Wednesday, December 16, 2026, book a hosted game by Wednesday, December 2, 2026 and a kit workshop for US addresses by Wednesday, November 25, 2026. With anyone in Canada or abroad, kits need about 5 weeks, so Wednesday, November 11, 2026 for that date.
