Team building for finance teams

The best team building for a finance team happens in the second or third week of the month, after the books close: a 60-minute hosted game or kit workshop that office and remote staff join on one video call. For controllers, AP and AR, FP&A and payroll teams.

Book it after the close

A finance team's month has one good window. Put the event there and people actually show up.

  • First business days

    Close

Reconciliations, accruals and reporting for the month that just ended. Nobody books anything, and quarter-end months take longer.
  • Second and third weeks

    The window

The books are closed and the next cutoff is weeks away. A Tuesday to Thursday afternoon here gets the best turnout.
  • Last week

    Cutoffs and accruals

Invoices to post, accruals to estimate, payroll to check. Leave it alone, especially in March, June, September and December.

The finance year, and where team events fit

Year-end, the audit and budget season decide the bigger dates. Here is the calendar from November 2026 to the fall 2027 budget.

  1. Nov 2026

    October close, then Thanksgiving

October books close in the first days of November. Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026, so the week of November 16 is the last easy slot before December.
  2. Dec 8 to 18, 2026

The holiday event, between two closes

After November close and before the year-end crunch. For Wednesday, December 16, book a hosted game by December 2, a kit workshop to US addresses by November 25, and by November 11 with guests in Canada or abroad.
  3. Thu, Dec 31, 2026

    Fiscal year-end

For a calendar fiscal year, the last day of the year starts the longest close of all. Nothing goes on the calendar the last week of December or the first weeks of January.
  4. Jan to Mar 2027

    Year-end close and the audit

Public companies file the annual report 60, 75 or 90 days after year-end, so a December 31 year-end lands on March 1, March 16 or March 31, 2027. Private companies often run their audit in the same months. Keep anything here to a short break.
  5. Apr 20 to 30, 2027

    The thank-you after the audit

Once Q1 close is done, thank the team that carried the audit. For Thursday, April 22, book a hosted game by April 8 or a kit workshop by April 1.
  6. Fall 2027

    Budget season

For a calendar fiscal year, next year's budget takes shape in the fall, and FP&A works with every department at once. Plan a short break mid-cycle and a celebration once the budget is approved.

Team building activities for accounting and finance departments

Small teams, a long remote tail, and the teams you support

Finance departments are often small, spread out and tied to fixed dates. What each part of the team needs from an event.

  • A small team in one office

A controller, AP and AR, and payroll can be a team of ten. Price per head matters, so see prices for small groups.
  • A long remote tail

Staff accountants, payroll and shared services working from home or another country. Everyone joins one call, and kits ship to each person's address.
  • Payroll on fixed dates

Payroll can't move a pay run for a party. Check the pay calendar first and pick a day that isn't a cutoff or a pay date.
  • Finance with the teams it supports

FP&A partners with sales, operations and HR all year. Invite those partners and mix them into teams: the game is the excuse to talk without a spreadsheet.

Finance team building questions

What is good team building for a finance team?

The best team building for a finance team happens in the second or third week of the month, after the books close: a 60-minute hosted game or kit workshop that office and remote staff join on one video call. Keep it clear of quarter-end, budget season and the year-end audit. Puzzle games, kit workshops and short workshops on focus or presenting all fit that slot.

When should a finance department schedule team building?

In the second or third week of the month, after close and before the next cutoff. Give quarter closes in April, July and October extra room, and keep the year-end close and audit, January to March 2027, and the busiest weeks of budget season clear.

When should a finance team hold its holiday party?

Between November close and year-end, so December 8 to 18, 2026. For Wednesday, December 16, book a hosted game by December 2 or a kit workshop to US addresses by November 25.

How is this different from team building for accounting firms or banks?

This page is for the finance department inside a company: controllers, AP and AR, FP&A and payroll. Their calendar is the monthly close and the year-end audit. Accounting firms plan around tax deadlines, and banks around market hours.

How much does team building for a finance team cost?

Hosted games are priced as a package for the group, and kit workshops as a base fee plus a price per kit. Clue with a Twist: Winter Fun! is $39 a person for a group of 25 ($975 package). Coffee Tasting is $89 a person plus a $379 base fee. Each card on this page shows its live price, and the table shows totals for 8, 20 and 50 people.

Can remote finance staff join?

Yes. Everyone joins one video call, on Zoom by default or on Microsoft Teams, Google Meet or Webex on request, and kits ship to each person's address. Continental US shipping is included; Alaska, Hawaii, US territories, Canada and international addresses cost extra.

How far ahead should we book?

About 2 weeks for a hosted game and about 3 weeks for a kit workshop to US addresses. With guests in Canada or abroad, book about 5 weeks out. You can pay by card with a 50% deposit or book with a PO and pay by invoice.
