Virtual retirement party

A virtual retirement party is a 60-minute video call that colleagues, former colleagues and family can all join: a welcome, a few short tributes, a memory slideshow, a hosted game everyone plays, and the retiree's last word. A live host runs the game, so you get to be a guest.

Hosted games book about 2 weeks ahead · A round about the retiree needs 4 weeks

A retiree at her kitchen table laughs as colleagues on a video call raise their mugs to her, her husband behind her and flowers beside the laptop

How to run a virtual retirement party

One hour, start to finish. You own the welcome, the tributes and the slideshow; the host runs the game; the retiree closes it.

  1. 0:00Doors open · the organizerGreet people by name as they join. Former colleagues often haven't seen each other in years; let them talk.
  2. 0:05Welcome · the managerTwo minutes on who the retiree is and how long they've been here.
  3. 0:08Tributes · four colleaguesNinety seconds each, picked ahead: someone from their first team, a peer, a direct report, a friend.
  4. 0:15Memory slideshow · the organizerPhotos from colleagues and family, set to one song. One person shares the screen.
  5. 0:20The hosted game · your hostEveryone plays in mixed teams, with the retiree on one of them. A round about their career if you ask early.
  6. 0:50The gift · the retireeThey open the gift on camera, so everyone who chipped in sees it land.
  7. 0:53The last word · the retireeThe floor is theirs for as long as they want it. Then a final toast and goodbye.

Before you plan anything

  • Ask the retiree how big they want it. Some want the whole company; some want ten people.
  • Hold it in work hours. It says the company is paying for the time.
  • Give each tribute a time limit and a theme, so four people don't tell the same story.
  • Have one person run the slideshow and the music. The host runs the game.

Retirement party games for work

Each one runs about an hour or less with a live host, on your own private link. Click any card for dates and booking.

A show, or a toast with a kit

The magic show asks nothing of anyone, so it suits a list that runs from the CEO to the grandkids. The kit toasts suit a smaller circle whose addresses you can collect; book them 21 days ahead for US guests.

Want a round about the retiree's 30 years? Most games can add your own questions with at least 4 weeks' notice; some requests cost extra. More formats on virtual team games.

Inviting former colleagues and family

A retirement guest list reaches past the current org chart. Here's who to ask and how to reach them.

  • The current teamA calendar invite from the manager, sent at least 2 weeks out.
  • Former colleaguesAsk the retiree for names. Reach them by personal email or LinkedIn, and send the plain meeting link.
  • People who retired before themThey know what the day feels like, and often say the best things.
  • FamilyAsk the retiree's partner. Family can gather around one laptop at home with the retiree.
  • Clients or partners they worked with for yearsOnly if the retiree wants them there. Ask first.

Guests outside the company

  • Zoom is the default and easiest for guests outside your company. Teams, Meet or Webex on request.
  • Hosted games price by headcount, so count family and former colleagues when you book.
  • Kits need an address for every guest. For a big mixed list, pick a game or a show instead.
  • Keep it a surprise from the retiree if you like, but tell their partner the date.

Picking a time across time zones

Start from the retiree's own time zone, then find the hour that reaches the most people inside their workday.

  • Across the US1:00 pm Eastern10:00 am Pacific, noon Central. Inside everyone's workday.
  • US and UK11:00 am Eastern4:00 pm in London, 8:00 am Pacific. The latest slot that still lands before UK evenings.
  • US East Coast and India9:00 am Eastern7:30 pm in India in winter. It is 6:00 am Pacific, so ask West Coast guests for a short video tribute.

US clocks go back on Sunday, November 1, 2026 and forward on Sunday, March 14, 2027. UK clocks change on Sunday, October 25, 2026 and Sunday, March 28, 2027. Between March 14 and March 28, 2027, London is 4 hours ahead of New York, not 5. Dates from NIST and GOV.UK.

Virtual retirement party questions

How do you host a virtual retirement party?

Hold one 60-minute video call: a welcome, three or four short tributes, a memory slideshow, a hosted game everyone plays, the gift, and the retiree's last word. Book a live host for the game so the organizer can be a guest, and send the link to colleagues, former colleagues and family.

What are good virtual retirement party ideas?

A game round about the retiree's career, a memory slideshow with photos from colleagues and family, timed tributes, and a toast with a cocktail or wine kit for a small group. For a longer list of ideas, see our 30 retirement party ideas.

What retirement party games work for work?

Games where nobody needs inside knowledge: survey rounds, mixed-team trivia, a quiz show or music bingo, run by a live host. Mixed teams put former and current colleagues together. Most games can add questions about the retiree with at least 4 weeks' notice; some requests cost extra.

Can former colleagues and family join?

Yes. Hosted games and shows need only the meeting link, so anyone can join from anywhere. Zoom is the default and the easiest for people outside your company. Count them in your headcount when you book.

How long should a virtual retirement party be?

About 60 minutes. The hosted game takes half of it; the welcome, tributes and slideshow take about 15 minutes, and the retiree's last word closes it.

How much does a virtual retirement party cost?

A hosted game like Fun-Filled Feud is $975 for up to 25 guests and $1,195 for 50, with the host included. Kit toasts are a base fee plus a price per guest, shown on their cards. A 50% deposit holds the date, and you can pay by card or invoice.

How far ahead should we book?

About 2 weeks for a hosted game or show, 4 weeks if you want questions about the retiree, and 21 days for a kit toast with US guests (about 5 weeks with anyone in Canada or abroad).

Can we send wine to everyone for the toast?

Wine Tasting ships within the continental US except to Delaware, Utah, Mississippi, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Virginia and Arkansas; guests there get a non-alcoholic kit, and an adult (21+) signs for every delivery. For a big mixed list with family, a game or show with no kit is simpler.

What should we give the retiree?

Something that arrives at home before the party, so they can open it on camera. Our retirement gifts page has gift boxes by budget, and the card is easier with our 150 retirement messages.
