Virtual baby shower for work

A virtual baby shower for work is an optional 45 to 60 minute video call three to four weeks before parental leave starts: wishes from the team, a hosted game, and a few minutes for the parent-to-be. Hosted games book two weeks ahead; a cookie or cocoa kit for every guest needs three.

Optional for every guest · Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Google Meet

How to run a virtual baby shower at work

Fifty minutes on the call. You own the wishes and the card, the host runs the game, and the parent-to-be has the last word.

  1. 0:00Wishes board on screen · the organizerShare the board as people join: one line of good wishes from each teammate.
  2. 0:05Three quick wishes · three teammatesThirty seconds each, read out loud. Wishes, not parenting advice.
  3. 0:10The hosted game · your hostEveryone plays, with the parent-to-be on a team. Ask for a 30-minute version when you book.
  4. 0:40The card and the gift · the managerRead the group card and say what the team is sending. The gift itself can wait for the baby.
  5. 0:45Their turn · the parent-to-beA few words, and anything they want the team to know before leave.

Only 45 minutes? Cut the three wishes and keep everything else.

Ask the parent-to-be first

  • Do they want a shower at all, and from the team or the whole office?
  • Before leave, or after the baby arrives?
  • May their partner join the call?
  • Any food limits for a cookie or cocoa kit?
  • Is anything off limits to mention on the call?

Before leave starts, or after the baby arrives

Most teams hold the shower before leave. Some parents would rather celebrate once the baby is home. Both work.

Before parental leave

  • Aim for three to four weeks before their last working day. Babies can come early.
  • Keep the last week for handover, not a party.
  • Hold it in their own working hours, not after them.
  • Book the game the day the date is set, and send the invite the same week.

After the baby arrives

  • Some parents prefer to wait, for personal, cultural or religious reasons. Ask, then follow their lead.
  • Adoption and surrogacy dates can move at short notice, so a welcome after arrival is often easier.
  • Send the gift home once they share the news, and save the call for their first weeks back.
  • A 30-minute welcome back with a hosted game works without a baby on camera.

Baby shower games and kits for work

We left cocktail and wine kits off this page: cookies and cocoa suit a guest of honor who may not be drinking. More on virtual cookie decorating and virtual team games.

Inviting remote teammates

Keep it optional and low-pressure. The point is good wishes, not a full calendar.

  • Mark the invite optional, and mean it: no attendance list, no follow-up.
  • Invite the people they work with, then ask them who else to add.
  • Collect wishes on the board for anyone who can't make the time.
  • Pick an hour inside the parent-to-be's workday, then the slot most of the team can reach.
  • Don't record the call. A shower is not a meeting.
  • Skip guessing games about due dates, weight or bump size.

With part of the team in the office

  • Book a room with a big screen, so the office joins as one tile.
  • Ship office guests' kits to the office in one box, or to each home.
  • Put one laptop in the room for the game, so office players answer too.
  • If the parent-to-be is remote, the office joins them, not the other way round.

Who organizes, who pays, and what it costs

A shower is a team event: the team plans it, the budget pays for the hour, and the gift is voluntary.

Who organizes

  • A teammate or the manager plans it, never the parent-to-be.
  • One person owns the board, one the card, one the gift.
  • The manager blocks the hour on the team calendar and protects it.

Who pays

  • The event comes from the team or culture budget, like any team event.
  • Gift money is voluntary, collected privately, with no amounts shared.
  • Book it on a card, or ask for an invoice or PO.

The group gift

One gift from the whole team, with one card everyone signs.

Announce it at the shower and send it to their home after the baby arrives, when a treat for the parents lands best. Our new baby gifts page has gifts by budget and what each person puts in for a team of 5, 10 or 20.

Virtual baby shower questions

How do you host a virtual baby shower for work?

Hold one optional 45 to 60 minute video call three to four weeks before the parent-to-be's leave starts: a wishes board on screen, three short wishes, a hosted game everyone plays, the group card, and a few words from the guest of honor. Book a live host for the game so the organizer can be a guest.

When should we have a baby shower for a coworker?

Three to four weeks before their last working day, since babies can come early and the last week is for handover. Book a hosted game 2 weeks before the shower and a cookie or cocoa kit 21 days before for US guests. If they would rather wait, celebrate after the baby arrives.

What are good office baby shower ideas?

A wishes board everyone adds to, a hosted game, a cookie or cocoa kit at every desk or home, and one group card and gift from the team. For a hybrid team, put the office on one big screen and ship kits to the office and to remote homes.

What games work for a baby shower at work?

Games the whole team can play: a poll game, a music quiz or game show rounds in small groups. Skip guessing games about due dates, weight or bump size. They can land badly at work.

Who organizes and pays for a baby shower at work?

A teammate or the manager organizes it, never the parent-to-be. The event usually comes from the team or culture budget, like any team event. Gift money is voluntary and collected privately.

How much does a virtual baby shower cost?

A hosted game like Poll Points! is $850 for 25 guests, with the host included. Cookie and cocoa kits are a base fee plus a price per guest, shown on their cards, with continental US shipping included. A 50% deposit holds the date, and you can pay by card or invoice.

Is a shower right when a coworker is adopting or using a surrogate?

Yes. Every path to parenthood counts, and partners are new parents too. Dates can move at short notice, so ask the parent whether they would like a shower before or a welcome after the baby arrives.

Should attendance be required?

No. Mark the invite optional, keep no attendance list, and let anyone who can't join add a line to the wishes board instead. The guest of honor should be able to say no to the whole thing too.

What should the team give for a new baby?

One group gift sent to their home after the baby arrives, with a card the whole team signs. Our new baby gifts page has gifts for the new parents by budget and a per-person table for chipping in.
