Wedding gifts for coworkers

Wedding gifts for a coworker, from the team or the company

The easiest wedding gift for a coworker is one gift from the whole team: a box of chocolate and a card everyone signs, given before their leave or shipped home for when they're back. At $10 each, 8 coworkers can send a $58 box.

When to give a coworker's wedding gift

A gift from work goes to work or to their door, at a moment the team can share. Four cases cover almost every wedding.

  • Their last day before leave

Hand it over at the last team meeting before the wedding, with the card everyone signed. Order 3 weeks ahead.

  • After the wedding, to their home

Ship it to arrive the week they are back, not while they are away. Chocolate shouldn't wait on a porch for two weeks.

  • A remote coworker

Ship to their home for the week they return, and say congratulations on the first team call back.

  • Never to the venue

The couple has enough to carry home on the day. A work gift belongs at work or at their door.

Birthdays, thank-yous and promotions have their own page: gifts for coworkers.

A group wedding gift from coworkers

At $10 each, here is what a team raises and a real gift it buys, with room left for shipping and the card.

  • One organizer.

One person collects, orders and keeps the card moving. Usually the closest teammate.

  • Optional and private.

Nobody sees who gave what, and $10 is a suggestion, not a price of entry.

  • Everyone signs.

The card goes to the whole team, whether or not they chipped in.

  • Buy for what you raised.

Pick the gift after the money is in, and leave room for shipping.

Wedding gifts from the company or from the team

Decide who the gift is from before anyone collects money, so nobody gives twice.

From the company

The same gift for every wedding, set once by HR or the manager, so nobody's wedding counts for more. The company pays and ships it home.

From the team

A pooled gift and a card with a line from each person. More personal, and the right one when the team knows the couple.

Both

If the company already sends a gift, the team can keep it to the card, or add a small box from the people who sit together.

The tax basics. Under IRS Publication 15-B (2026), cash and gift cards are never a tax-free de minimis benefit, however small. A low-value gift that isn’t cash can be. General information only: check with your payroll provider.

What to write in a coworker's wedding card

One short line each when the whole team signs. Warm, short and about the couple.

  • Congratulations to you both. Enjoy every minute, and don't check email.
  • From all of us at work: a very happy wedding and a sweet start.
  • We'll hold the fort. You go get married. Congratulations!
  • Wishing you a wonderful wedding day and a long, happy marriage.
  • Congratulations! Something sweet for when you're back home.
  • So happy for you both. The team is cheering from here.

Before you order

Six quick checks that keep a wedding gift from work kind and fair.

  • Allergies and diet.

Our gifts are chocolate. Ask a close teammate quietly about nuts, dairy and sweets, and check the ingredients before you order.

  • The right address.

Ask them, or ask HR to ask with their OK. Not from the invitation list.

  • Their name on the label.

Don't assume a name change. Use the name they use at work until they tell you otherwise.

  • Invited or not.

A gift from work never depends on who got an invitation. Don't ask about the guest list.

  • Every wedding counts the same.

First or second wedding, a courthouse or a big party: same team, same gift.

  • A gift, not a gift card, from the company.

Gift cards are never a tax-free de minimis benefit under IRS Publication 15-B (2026).

Wedding gift questions

What is a good wedding gift for a coworker?

One gift from the team rather than many small ones: a box of chocolate to celebrate, with a card everyone signs. Give it at their last team meeting before the wedding, or ship it to their home for the week they're back. Our gifts start at $22.

How much should coworkers chip in for a wedding gift?

$5 to $15 each is comfortable for most teams, and $10 is an easy number to suggest. Eight people at $10 is $80, enough for a $58 box with room for shipping. Keep it optional and private, and let everyone sign the card.

Should coworkers buy from the wedding registry?

Only if the couple shared it with the team and you know them well. A gift from work doesn't need a registry, an invitation or knowing the partner: a chocolate gift and a card say congratulations from the people they work with.

Should a company give an employee a wedding gift?

Many do, and it works best as a rule: the same gift for every wedding, set once, so no one's wedding counts for more. HR or the manager sends it to the employee's home. The team can still add its own card.

When should you give a coworker a wedding gift?

Before they leave for the wedding, at the last team meeting, or shipped to arrive the week they're back. Order about 3 weeks ahead. Don't send a work gift to the venue, and don't let chocolate sit on a porch while they're away.

What do you write in a wedding card for a coworker?

Keep it short and warm: "Congratulations to you both. Enjoy every minute, and don't check email." or "From all of us at work: a very happy wedding and a sweet start." One line each is plenty when the whole team signs.

Is a wedding gift from the company taxable?

Under IRS Publication 15-B (2026), cash and gift cards are never a tax-free de minimis benefit, no matter how small. A non-cash gift with a low value can be, but ask your payroll provider how they treat a wedding gift. This is general information, not tax advice.

Can the gift ship to my coworker's home?

Yes. Each gift ships to its own address with your note inside, timed for the week they're back. Ask them for the address, or ask HR to ask, rather than taking it from the invitation.
