Virtual white elephant: how to run a gift exchange over video
How to get gifts to people, when to hold it in December 2026, and a free tracker for turns and steals. Share your screen and run the whole game from it.

A virtual white elephant is a gift exchange on a video call: players take turns in a random order, each opening a new gift or stealing one already opened, and the gifts reach their final owners after the game, shipped from an online store or sent as e-gifts. Decide how gifts travel before you send the invite, and if they ship, hold the game by about December 10, 2026 so they arrive before December 25.
6 players. The order is drawn at random.
Paste the names, pick a steal cap and share your screen. A gift stolen during a turn can’t be stolen again until someone opens a new one, so there are no instant steal-backs. The game is saved in this browser only.
Three ways to get the gifts to people
In an office the gifts sit on a table. Remote, you have to pick how they travel, and that choice sets the budget, the dates and who orders what. The game itself plays the same; our white elephant rules cover it step by step.
Photo reveal, shipped after. Each player picks a gift online, sends the host a photo, and orders it after the game, shipped straight to whoever ends up with it.
Best for: US teams of 6 to 20 who want the fun of choosing a gift.
Watch for: Store shipping times. Set an order-by date the day after the call.
Company gift pool. The company buys one gift per player, the host shows them in the game, and each one ships to its final owner afterward.
Best for: Small companies that don't want staff spending their own money, or teams with very different budgets.
Watch for: Lead time. Order the moment the game ends, and pick gifts that ship to every address on the list.
Digital gifts only. Every gift is an e-gift card, a subscription or an online class, delivered by email within minutes of the game.
Best for: Teams across countries, and anything planned in the last week.
Watch for: Cards with a printed value turn stealing into math. Name the store, hide the amount.
Skip mailing wrapped gifts ahead to be opened on camera. It feels closest to the real thing, but every steal means a gift has to be mailed a second time.
Going with a company gift pool? Our chocolate gift boxes start at $22 and ship to each home with your note inside; allow 2 to 3 weeks for smaller unbranded orders. For a gift that every person gets, outside the game, see holiday gifts.
Thinking of gift cards for the pool? The Publication 15-B (2026), Employer's Tax Guide to Fringe Benefits (opens in a new tab) says gift cards from an employer are never excludable as a de minimis benefit, however small. Check with your payroll provider before you buy.
2026 dates for a December virtual white elephant

How long a virtual white elephant takes
Plan on about 2 minutes per player with a 2-steal cap. Turns run slower on video than around a table, mostly from unmuting and audio lag.
- 6 to 8 players
- 15 to 20 minutes
- 10 to 12 players
- 25 to 30 minutes
- 15 to 20 players
- 35 to 45 minutes
- More than 20
- Split into breakout rooms of 8 to 12, one gift pool per room
Run of show for a 45-minute call
- 0:00
- Welcome, the budget, and the steal cap in one sentence.
- 0:05
- Shuffle the turn order on screen and paste it in chat.
- 0:08
- Turns, about 2 minutes each. The host reads every result out loud.
- 0:38
- Player 1's last move, then copy the final list into chat.
- 0:42
- Shipping plan: who sends what to whom, and the order-by date.
Turn order and steals over video
The classic rules hold. These six changes keep a call moving.
- Shuffle the order on screen. Draw it live in the tracker above while sharing your screen, so nobody wonders if it was fixed.
- Cap steals at 2 per gift. Every steal adds a turn, and turns run slower on video than around a table.
- Say it, then type it. Players say "I'm stealing the candle from Ben" and type the same in chat, which settles audio lag.
- Late joiners go to the end. Add them after the last name instead of reshuffling.
- A teaser before every reveal. With photo gifts, the buyer reads a one-line hint before the host shows the picture, which stands in for the unwrapping.
- Player 1 gets the last move. They went first with nothing to steal, so they may swap once when everyone holds a gift.

Office white elephant gifts that ship well
Any gift in a remote game has to survive a trip to a stranger. Check it against these five, then browse our white elephant gift ideas by budget.
- Fits in a small box. Shipping on bulky gifts can cost more than the gift.
- No sizes. Nobody knows the winner in advance, so skip clothes and shoes.
- Nothing that melts or spoils over a weekend. Order early in the week if it's food.
- Ships from the store. Buying online for direct delivery saves a trip to the post office.
- Looks good in a photo. On video, the picture is the unwrapping, so pick something people recognize at a glance.
When something goes wrong
Four problems hosts hit, and the fix for each.
- Someone sent a gift photo but can't come. Play their gift as the last one opened and ship whatever is left to them.
- A gift won't arrive by the holidays. The buyer sends an e-gift from the same store today and the real one after.
- A player is outside the US. Their buyer sends an e-gift from a shop in their country instead of shipping across a border.
- Someone hates what they ended up with. Allow private trades after the game, as long as both people agree.
Make the exchange part of a hosted holiday party
A white elephant fills 30 minutes. Pair it with a hosted game and it becomes the party: our virtual holiday parties run about 60 minutes with a live host on Zoom, or Teams, Google Meet or Webex on request. Book about 2 weeks ahead, so by November 25 for a December 10 party.
