32 awards with who each is for, how to pick winners and what to give. Then a years of service award for every milestone, with words to say when you present it.

These employee award ideas are grouped the way most programs run them: performance, values, team and peer, and a few light-hearted ones. Years of service awards for employees follow, from 1 to 30+ years.

Years of service award ideas, by milestone
Step the award up from a first-year pin to 30 year service awards, and read a short story about the person when you present it. Copy a blurb and fill in the brackets.
Physical gifts for long service can be tax-free in the US when they follow the rules in the tax section below. Our employee recognition program guide shows where service awards fit next to everyday thanks.
Years of service social media posts and announcements
We wrote all of these. Copy one, fill in the brackets and add one detail only your team would know.
Years of service social media posts
For the company page on LinkedIn or Instagram. Ask the person first, and add a photo they approve.
Internal announcements
For Slack, Teams or the company newsletter.
Writing a personal note instead? Our work anniversary messages are sorted by milestone and sender.
Award ceremony ideas: three run-of-shows
The story is the award. Every format below reads the nomination out loud before saying the name.
A 10-minute all-hands segment
For quarterly awards and service milestones.
- Minute 0: the host names the awards and how winners were picked.
- Minute 1: for each award, read two lines from the nomination before saying the name.
- Minute 6: service milestones, one presenting blurb each, longest service last.
- Minute 9: one group thank-you and a photo, then back to the agenda.
A 30-minute ceremony at the year-end party
For the annual awards, inside a bigger celebration.
- Start after food is out and before the games, while energy is highest.
- Light-hearted awards first to warm up the room.
- Team and peer awards next, each with the nomination read aloud.
- Performance and values awards last, presented by a senior leader.
- Close with every winner on stage for one photo, then start the party game.

A 45-minute virtual awards ceremony
For remote and hybrid teams. Ship the awards so they arrive the day before.
- Ask winners to keep their package closed until their name is called.
- Open with a 15-minute icebreaker game so people are talking before the awards start.
- Spotlight each winner's video, read the nomination, then let them open the box on camera.
- Fill the chat with congratulations between awards; save the thread for the winners.
- For teams across time zones, run it twice or record it for the second group.
Planning the whole evening? Our end of year celebration ideas cover the rest of the party.
How to keep employee awards fair
Awards backfire when the same people win every year or the criteria are a mystery. Six rules:
- Publish criteria before nominations open. People nominate better when they know what counts.
- Match the picker to the award. Votes for peer awards, a panel with evidence for performance awards.
- Hide nominator names from the judges. It keeps the decision about the work, not the friendship.
- Cap wins. One award per person per year spreads recognition further.
- Check the spread. Compare winners by team, location, shift and role before you announce.
- Write to every nominee. A short note to each one turns a lost vote into recognition anyway.
Awards are the big moments; the everyday thanks between them matter more. See our employee recognition ideas.
Are years of service awards taxable? The US rules
To be tax-free to the employee as a length-of-service award, an item must meet all of these rules from IRS Publication 15-B and section 274(j) of the tax code. If it misses one, its value is generally taxable pay.
- Physical items only. Cash, gift cards, vacations, meals, lodging, event tickets and securities don't qualify. Letting someone choose from a limited set of physical items is fine.
- Not in the first 5 years. An item given during someone's first 5 years of employment doesn't count as a length-of-service award.
- Once every 5 years. It doesn't qualify if the person got another length-of-service award, other than one of very small value, that year or in any of the prior 4 years.
- A real presentation. It has to be part of a meaningful presentation and must not look like disguised pay.
- Dollar limits per employee per year. Up to $400 for awards outside a qualified plan, and $1,600 in total when the awards come from a written plan that doesn't favor highly paid employees. Over the limit, the excess is taxable and the rest stays tax-free.
- Safety awards have two more limits. The same rules apply, but they don't qualify for managers, administrators, clerical or other professional staff, or once more than 1 in 10 of your other employees got one that year.
Give the awards a moment: events and gifts
An award lands best in front of the people who saw the work. Want someone else to run the room?
- Hosted games around the ceremony. Gratitude Games & Grins is a high-energy game night built around gratitude, and Your Favorite Game Shows! has small groups play classic TV game shows at the same time. More on our employee appreciation events and virtual game show pages.
- Year-end awards. Pair them with a virtual holiday party for everyone, or a hosted game at your office through our in-person events in 17 US cities. A hybrid team can do one in the office plus a virtual session for remote staff. December dates fill first.
- The award itself. Our employee anniversary gifts and employee appreciation gifts start at $22 and ship to the office or to every home. Order small unbranded orders about 2 to 3 weeks ahead, and branded or 100+ gift orders 4 to 6 weeks ahead.
- Hosted games run about an hour on Zoom by default (Teams, Google Meet or Webex on request). Book about 2 weeks ahead; teams across time zones can have the game run as two sessions.
