Christmas charades: 180 words and a card generator

Christmas charades is the classic acting game with holiday clues: one player acts out a Christmas movie, song, tradition or character in silence while their team guesses within 60 seconds.

The words come in six themes: Christmas movies, song titles, traditions, characters, winter (nothing tied to one holiday) and office party moments. Each theme runs from easy single actions to hard titles and phrases, so you can match the round to the room. Pick from the lists below, or let the generator draw a card and run the clock.

The actor opens this page on their phone and taps New word, or the host draws each card and sends it to the actor privately. Pick a theme and a difficulty; no card repeats until you have seen them all.

Playing with the whole company? With 40 or more people on video, a host-run virtual game show keeps every team playing instead of watching one actor.

Rather have a host run the holiday games?

Charades stalls when one actor faces 30 people on a call. A live host keeps every team playing at once with a mix of quick holiday games, and the organizer gets to play too. Each runs about an hour on Zoom by default (Teams, Google Meet or Webex on request). Hosted games book about 2 weeks ahead, and December dates go first.

How to play Christmas charades

Five rules cover it. Agree on them before the first actor stands up.

  1. Make two teams. Up to about ten a side in one room. Mix departments so the finance team isn't only guessing for itself.
  2. The actor gets a card in secret. Draw it on your phone with the generator, or pull a slip from a bowl of printed words.
  3. Signal the theme first. Use the six Christmas signals below so your team knows if it's a movie, a song or an office moment.
  4. Act it out in silence. No words, no humming, no spelling letters in the air. Props within arm's reach are fine at a party.
  5. Sixty seconds to guess. A right guess scores one point for the actor's team. Then the other team sends an actor.

Christmas charades signals

Show the theme first, then the number of words. Teach these in one minute before the game.

  • Movie or TV special: Crank an old film camera beside your head.
  • Song: Cup a hand by your mouth like you're about to sing (no sound).
  • Tradition: Hang an invisible ornament on an invisible tree.
  • Character: Tap your own shoulder twice: it's a who.
  • Winter: Hug yourself and shiver.
  • Office party: Type on an invisible keyboard.
  • Number of words: Hold up that many fingers, then fingers again to show which word you are acting.
  • Sounds like: Tug your ear, then act a word that rhymes.

In the office, hybrid or on video

  • In the office: Clear a small stage at the front, give the referee the timer, and keep the score on a whiteboard everyone can see.
  • Hybrid: Point the room camera at the stage, mix remote and office players on both teams, and take remote guesses in the chat.
  • On a video call: The host copies each word to the actor in a private message, spotlights the actor, and the actor stands back until both arms fit in frame.

Charades fills about 15 to 20 minutes. Planning the full party for a remote team? See our virtual holiday party options, with hosted games, tastings and kit workshops priced for your headcount.

Four Christmas twists

Played a few rounds already? Change one thing.

  • What's in the box? The actor unwraps an invisible gift and uses it. The team guesses the gift. Works great with the Traditions and Office party cards.
  • Holiday card freeze-frame A whole team poses one frozen scene, like a family photo for a holiday card. The other team gets 30 seconds to name the card.
  • Seated charades Everyone acts from their chair using only hands and face. Easier on video and open to everyone in the room.
  • December countdown One card at the start of each team meeting in December. The first right guess picks the music for the next meeting.

Christmas charades FAQ

How do you play Christmas charades?

Split into two teams. One player draws a Christmas word, shows the theme with a signal, and acts it out in silence while their own team guesses within 60 seconds. A right guess scores a point, then the other team acts. Most teams play until everyone has had a turn.

What are good Christmas charades ideas for adults?

Scenes everyone knows but no kid would pick: untangling Christmas lights, regifting, assembling a toy at midnight, Clark Griswold, the last meeting of the year, a Secret Santa reveal. Mix easy single actions with a few hard titles so each round has a laugh and a win.

What are easy Christmas charades words?

Writing a letter to Santa, shaking a present, licking a candy cane, catching snowflakes on your tongue, wearing earmuffs and decorating your desk. Each is one clear action, so they work for a first round or a mixed group.

How do you play Christmas charades on Zoom?

The host keeps this page open and sends each word to the actor in a private chat message, then spotlights the actor. The actor mutes, stands back until both arms are in frame and acts for 60 seconds while teammates guess out loud or in the chat. For big groups, use breakout rooms as teams. For 40 or more people, a host-run virtual game show keeps everyone playing.

Are these Christmas charades words OK for work?

Yes. Every word is workplace-safe, songs are titles only, and the Winter cards have nothing tied to one holiday, so teammates who celebrate something else, or nothing, can play every round.

How long should a game of Christmas charades take?

About 15 to 20 minutes for 10 to 16 people: one minute per turn plus a little time to swap actors. Stop while people still want more.

Can someone run a holiday game for our team?

Yes. A live host can run an hour of holiday games on Zoom by default (Teams, Google Meet or Webex on request). Hosted games book about 2 weeks ahead; see Holiday Fun & Games for today's price.
