Administrative Professionals Day is the day offices thank the people who keep them running: assistants, office managers, receptionists and coordinators. It works best when it costs the admins nothing, including the planning. Below: the dates, a short history, 30 ideas sorted by budget and by office or remote, a plan for the whole week and 40 messages to copy.

When is Administrative Professionals Day 2027?

Administrative Professionals Day 2027 is Wednesday, April 21, 2027. In the US and Canada it is always the Wednesday of the last full week of April, so the date moves each year. Administrative Professionals Week runs April 19 to April 23, 2027. It is an observance, not a public holiday.

From Secretaries Day to Admin Day

It began as National Secretaries Day in 1952, created by Mary Barrett of the National Secretaries Association, Dictaphone president C. King Woodbridge and Harry F. Klemfuss of the ad agency Young & Rubicam. People still search for it as Secretaries Day, Admin Day and Administrative Assistants Day.

  3. 1955The week moves to the last full week of April, where it has stayed.
  4. 1981The association becomes Professional Secretaries International, and the week becomes Professional Secretaries Week.
  5. 1998The association takes its current name: the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP).
  6. 2000The week is renamed Administrative Professionals Week, to cover the full range of admin roles.

Who to celebrate

Everyone in an admin role, the same way. Leaving one person out stings more than a small gift pleases.

  • Executive and administrative assistants
  • Office managers
  • Receptionists and front desk staff
  • Project, event and facilities coordinators
  • HR, payroll and finance assistants
  • Department and team admins
  • Remote, part-time and agency admins

30 Administrative Professionals Day ideas

Pick one from two or three groups. The rule for all of them: the admins don't plan, order or clean up any of it.

Free: time, credit and attention

No budget, just a manager who follows through.

  1. Collect the save stories. Ask the team for one time the admin rescued them, and read three aloud at standup.Office or remote
  2. Invite them to the planning meeting. The quarterly one they usually only schedule. Ask for their view.Office or remote
  3. Protect their calendar. Block a no-meeting morning and keep every request off it.Office or remote
  4. Shadow them for an hour. A manager sits in, writes down everything they juggle and shares the list with the team.In the office
  5. Ask what they would change. Which process wastes their time? Fix one of them by Friday.Office or remote
  6. Credit them in the wrap-up. Put their name on the launch or event recap, next to the people who shipped it.Office or remote

Small spend: under $25 a person

A little money, aimed at something they actually like.

  1. A team breakfast someone else arranges. Pastries and fruit at 9, ordered by a manager, with dairy-free and gluten-free options. In the office
  2. An orchid for the desk. Lasts for weeks with little care, and everyone who walks by asks about it.In the office
  3. A coffee run on the team. Everyone's order, theirs first, and someone else carries the tray.In the office
  4. A good notebook with their initials. For the to-do lists they keep on behalf of everyone else.Office or remote
  5. A book they mentioned, signed inside. Every teammate writes one line on the inside cover.Office or remote
  6. A long lunch out, phones covered. They pick the restaurant; a colleague covers the desk and inbox for two hours. In the office
Four coworkers share croissants, muffins and fruit at an office kitchen counter, one raising a coffee mug.

Team experiences

An hour where the admins are guests, not organizers.

  1. A hosted kit workshop. A kit ships to each guest and everyone makes something together on the call.Office or remote
  2. A hosted game hour. Trivia or a game show, with the admins as team captains.Office or remote
  3. Lunch with leadership. Executives host, the admins choose the place, and nobody brings a work request. In the office
  4. A skills session they choose. Spreadsheets, project tools or presenting, taught by a trainer on company time.Office or remote
  5. A meetup across offices. Admins from every site meet, on a call or in person, to swap shortcuts.Office or remote
  6. An outing they don't organize. A museum, a cooking class or a long walk, booked by someone else.In the office

Remote and hybrid admins

Same thanks, different logistics: it has to reach them where they work that week.

  1. A paper card in the mail. Signed by everyone and mailed to their home a few days early.Remote
  2. A gift that lands on Monday. Ship it to arrive at the start of the week, never at an empty desk.Remote
  3. Open the all-hands with them. Two minutes, cameras on, three named wins from their year.Remote
  4. A lunch delivery credit. On the company, eaten together on a call if they want company.Remote
  5. Voice notes from the team. Each person records 20 seconds of thanks; send them as one playlist.Remote
  6. Match what the office gets. The same gift, time and thanks as the office group, scheduled in their time zone.Office or remote

From leadership: the thanks that lasts

A box of chocolates is nice. These change someone's year.

  1. A career conversation. Ask where they want to grow and put one next step in writing.Office or remote
  2. A title that fits the work. Many admins run budgets, vendors and events. Make sure the title says so.Office or remote
  3. A spot bonus with a reason. A one-off bonus and a note naming exactly what earned it.Office or remote
  4. The Friday of Admin Week off. Paid, with cover arranged so nothing is waiting on Monday.Office or remote
  5. A seat at the offsite. Invite them as attendees, not organizers, to the next leadership offsite.Office or remote
  6. A budget the admin team controls. A small yearly fund for tools, training or a conference of their choice.Office or remote

More ways to say thanks the rest of the year are in our employee recognition ideas, and employee appreciation quotes work well on a card or a slide.

Administrative Professionals Week: a five-day plan

One small thing a day beats one big lunch. Dates are for 2027.

  1. Mon, Apr 19Announce it. Post the plan for the week, name every admin included and ask the team for save stories.
  2. Tue, Apr 20Breakfast. Someone other than the admins orders it, sets it out and cleans up.
  3. Wed, Apr 21Admin Day itself. Cards from their executives, one minute of thanks at standup, gifts on the desk or at the door.
  4. Thu, Apr 22Learning. The skills session they picked, or the career conversation with their manager.
  5. Fri, Apr 23Play. A hosted game or workshop for the whole team, then an early finish.

Run it with a host, or send a gift

Want the admins to be guests instead of organizers? Book an hour someone else runs.

  • A kit workshop. A kit ships to every guest and a host leads the hour on a video call. Candle and terrarium kits need at least 16 days, coffee 21; book 3 to 4 weeks out so everyone has time to send an address.
  • A hosted game. An hour of trivia or a game show for the whole team, booked about 2 weeks ahead. Teams across time zones can have it run as two sessions.
  • A gift for every admin. Chocolate gifts from $22 ship with your card inside, to the office or to each home.

Administrative Professionals Day FAQ

When is Administrative Professionals Day 2027?

Administrative Professionals Day 2027 is Wednesday, April 21, 2027. It falls on the Wednesday of the last full week of April in the US and Canada, so the date moves each year. In 2028 it is Wednesday, April 26, 2028.

Is Administrative Professionals Day always on a Wednesday?

Yes. It is always the Wednesday of the last full Sunday-to-Saturday week of April, which puts it between April 21 and April 27. That is usually the fourth Wednesday, but not always: when April 30 falls on a Friday, as in 2027, the week of April 25 runs into May, so the day is the third Wednesday.

Is Administrative Professionals Day the same as Secretaries Day?

Yes, it is the same observance under a newer name. It began in 1952 as National Secretaries Day, became Professional Secretaries Day in 1981 and took its current name in 2000. Many people still search for it as Secretaries Day or Admin Day.

Is Administrative Professionals Week the whole week?

Yes. Administrative Professionals Week runs April 19 to April 23, 2027. Most offices spread small thank-yous across the working week and save the card and the main moment for Wednesday.

Who should be celebrated on Administrative Professionals Day?

Everyone in an admin role: executive and administrative assistants, office managers, receptionists, coordinators, HR and payroll assistants, and remote or agency admins. Celebrate the whole group the same way, so nobody is left out.

Is Administrative Professionals Day a federal holiday?

No. It is an observance, not a public holiday, so offices stay open and nobody gets the day off unless the company gives it.

What do you write in an Administrative Professionals Day card?

Thank them for one specific thing they did and say what it made possible, then sign your name. Two or three sentences is plenty. Copy one of the 40 messages on this page and add a detail only you would know.

How much should you spend on an Administrative Professionals Day gift?

There is no set amount. Many managers keep it modest and give every admin the same gift, then add time, credit or a career step for the person they work with most. Our admin day gifts page lists gifts by budget with order-by dates.
