How to use a hard work quote at work

A quote is the second line of a good message, never the first. Lead with what happened.

  1. In a recognition note. Lead with what the person did, then let the quote say why it matters. The specific part does the work; the quote is the bow on top.“You rewrote the onboarding guide three times until new hires stopped asking the same questions. Emerson said the reward of a thing well done is to have done it. Here's a second reward: thank you.”
  2. As a caption. Under a team photo from launch week or a picture of the whiteboard at 7 p.m., a short quote says it better than a paragraph. Credit the speaker.“Make each day your masterpiece.” (John Wooden) Launch week, done.
  3. On an all-hands slide. Close a results slide with one quote and one number that proves it. Pick a quote about persistence for a turnaround, about craft for a quality win.“Eighteen months, 140 customer calls, one new pricing page. Few things are impossible to diligence and skill.”
  4. In a Monday post. A quote about rest lands well on the Monday after a crunch. It tells people the pace is changing, from the person who sets it.“Big push is over. Steinbeck called sleep a committee that solves problems overnight. Please let it meet this week: no meetings before 10.”

Thank you for your hard work: 30 messages to copy

We wrote these, so they carry no names: send them as your own, and swap in one detail only you would know. For more, see our thank you messages for coworkers.

After a launch

Send it the day after, once people have slept. Name one thing that went right because of them.

  1. Customers are using what you built today, and that started with your weeks in testing. Thank you for your hard work getting us here.

  2. The launch went out on the date we promised. That happened because you kept chasing the last open items when everyone else was tired. Thank you.

  3. Thank you for the hard work on the bug you caught the night before launch. Nobody outside this team will ever know how close it was.

  4. We launched, nothing broke, and support had a calm morning. Thank you for the work nobody saw that made that possible.

  5. Thank you for the hard work, team. Take a breath today. Tomorrow we read the feedback together.

  6. I watched you rework the signup flow three times until it felt right. The first week of signups says it was worth it. Thank you.

At the end of a busy season

For the end of peak season, year-end close or the conference everybody worked.

  1. Busy season is over. Thank you for your hard work through every long week of it, and please use the slow days to recharge.

  2. Thank you for carrying the extra volume this season without letting quality slip. Customers felt the difference even when you were stretched.

  3. We made it through the rush. Thank you for the extra shifts, the patience on the phones and the good humor at 6 p.m.

  4. Thank you for your hard work this season. Lunch is on us on Friday, and nobody is allowed to talk about tickets.

  5. Thank you for training the seasonal hires while still doing your own job. So much of what went right this season traces back to you.

  6. Year-end close is done, on time and clean. Thank you for the hours you put into every reconciliation.

After a tough quarter

Thanking people when the numbers were bad matters more than when they were good.

  1. This quarter didn't go the way any of us planned. Thank you for your hard work anyway. It's what we will build on next quarter.

  2. Thank you for staying steady when the numbers were not. A hard quarter shows who keeps showing up, and you did, every day.

  3. We missed the target, and I still want to say thank you. You made smart calls with less than we needed.

  4. Thank you for your hard work through a rough few months. You kept the team calm, and that was worth more than any single deal.

  5. Thank you for the discipline you brought when it would have been easy to coast. Tough quarters are where good habits get built.

  6. Thank you for not giving up on the accounts that looked lost. Two of them renewed because you kept calling.

From a manager

Specific beats grand. Say what you saw, then what it changed.

  1. I don't say it often enough: thank you for your hard work. You make my job easier and the team better.

  2. You turned a budget spreadsheet nobody trusted into one we can plan with. Thank you for that hard work.

  3. Thank you for owning the details so the rest of the team can move fast. That kind of hard work is easy to miss, and I don't miss it.

  4. Thank you for your hard work this year. Let's talk next week about what you want to learn next, because you have earned the room to grow.

  5. Thank you for the extra hours this sprint. Now I need you to take Friday off, and I mean actually off.

  6. Thank you for your hard work and for asking for help when you needed it. Both are part of doing the job well.

From a peer

A thank-you between teammates needs no occasion and no permission.

  1. Thank you for your hard work on our shared project. You made the hard parts look manageable and the boring parts bearable.

  2. Working next to you this month has been a lesson in follow-through. Thank you for doing everything you said you would.

  3. Thanks for all the hard work on the handoff doc. I picked it up cold and didn't have to ask you a single question.

  4. Thank you for the hard work you put in behind the scenes. The meeting went well because your prep was so good.

  5. I know you stayed late to get my piece reviewed. Thank you. Next crunch, I've got yours.

  6. Thank you for your hard work, teammate. You're the reason this project felt like a team effort and not a solo sprint.

Famous hard work quotes we left out

You'll find these sayings about success and hard work on most quote lists. We left them off because the name under them doesn't hold up.

  • “Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence.” (usually credited to Calvin Coolidge)

Quote Investigator found the wording in a 1902 speech by someone else, and Coolidge's name wasn't attached to it until 1929. Wikiquote traces earlier versions of the passage to an 1881 youth guidance book.

  • “I'm a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it.” (usually credited to Thomas Jefferson)

Wikiquote lists it as misattributed. Nobody has found it in Jefferson's writing, and the book it is sometimes traced to doesn't contain it either.

  • “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” (usually credited to Confucius)

Wikiquote lists it as misattributed. The oldest English version Quote Investigator found is from 1982, with no link to Confucius.

  • “Continuous effort, not strength or intelligence, is the key to unlocking our potential.” (usually credited to Winston Churchill)

Wikiquote lists it as disputed. Quote Investigator found it first in a 1981 book, 16 years after Churchill died.

  • “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” (usually credited to Aristotle)

These are Will Durant's words, from his 1926 summary of Aristotle in The Story of Philosophy.

  • “The harder I practice, the luckier I get.” (usually credited to Gary Player)

Quote Investigator found the luck-and-work line in print by 1949, and Player's own 1962 book credits the saying to fellow golfer Jerry Barber.

Hard work quotes FAQ

What is a good quote about hard work?

Booker T. Washington's “Nothing ever comes to me, that is worth having, except as the result of hard work” is hard to beat, and it's from his 1901 autobiography Up from Slavery. For something lighter, Thomas Edison's “Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration” is the classic.

What is a short caption on hard work?

John Wooden's “Make each day your masterpiece” and Samuel Johnson's “Few things are impossible to diligence and skill” both fit under a photo. Every quote in our short list is under 12 words, and each has a copy button.

Did Thomas Jefferson say “The harder I work, the luckier I get”?

No record shows he did, and Wikiquote lists the line as misattributed. Quote Investigator found the idea in a 1949 newspaper column, more than a century after Jefferson died, so if you like it, use it without a name.

Who said “Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration”?

Thomas Edison. He confirmed it himself in a 1927 letter, saying he had made the statement and was still of the same opinion.

How do you say thank you for your hard work?
